A Happy Accident

Once there was a potter. He was very good at his craft, yet he couldn't reach the skill of his deceased grandfather. His most treasured possession is a stunningly beautiful vase, which he inherited from his grandfather. It's made of the finest porcelain and shows a delicately formed dragon running along its whole side.

Sadly, one day he stumbled and bumped into the vase. It tumbled over and shattered into many pieces. The potter was devastated about this loss, but after thinking thoroughly he got an idea. Kintsugi, the art of repairing broken ceramic with gold mixed into glue. This way you don't try to hide the ugly cuts. No, you embrace and accept them. He hasn't done it before, so he prepared very carefully. He cleaned every shard and laid them out in order. The next morning, he performed the repair. It took him a couple of hours, but he was very satisfied with the result. As a reward he took a leisurely stroll around the gardens.

It didn't take long until his walk turned into work and he cleaned the path and took care of some plants. He discovered a broken branch of a wisteria. What a waste, he thought, and brought it back home. He made some dinner, and before he finally turned in for the night, he wanted to check out the fruits of his labor. He filled the vase with water and was delighted to see that none of it spilled. He remembered the wisteria branch and put it in there. With a last smile on his face he went to bed.

On the next day, he was shocked. The vase was gone. Instead there sat a tiny... doll? She looked mostly human, but had a dragon's tail and ears. Not to mention that she was made entirely out of porcelain. She looked up to him and said: "Good morning, Sensei!"

Kumi

  • Kumi is born through Tsukumogami
  • She loves her master with all her heart and always calls him 'Sensei'
  • She is eager to help with everything, but is rather restricted by her size. Nevertheless she manages to make tea or heat up sake. He got her an extra small stove and pot for that, which works with candles.
  • She watches him work. Every time. She loves to see how his hands form new things
  • She often gets dirty whenever she tries to help him out with his work. In that case he has to wash her in a little bowl afterwards. She enjoys this a lot, but he is a bit conflicted about this.
  • Her master has a tendency to overwork. She has a sharp eye on him and scolds him whenever he doesn't take care of his health
  • A day spent with Sensei, is a good day
