Michael spent time overseas during the Gulf War. Around this time period the Permian Basin Superorganism was absorbed into the National Park System, and the study of this fascinating mystery intrigued Michael. Having been a very young man returning home from the war with a couple of new diagnoses to show for it, Michael joined the park staff as a medic. He was joined on the staff by a fellow former marine, William "Billy" Jay Hawkers, who remains one of his closest companions. His employment lasted from 1995 through the 2007 disaster. He was stationed in the Surveyor Corridor.
