Vance's childhood upbringing was pretty average, with the whole overprotective parents who wanted her to be exactly like them bit. She harbors a lot of anger and resentment for authority because of this. Her given name is "Veronica" which she absolutely hated. She's always been more of a tomboy, and after her parents noticed her interest in sports and skateboarding, they forced her into the more traditional gendered "girly" activities and clothes, which Vance detested. When she turned 16, everything came to a boiling point and she moved out and into her own place. She wanted to distance herself from her family as much as possible, so she rented a crappy apartment, changed her name, dyed and cut her hair, and started trying to live her best life. Unfortunately her father passed away from a stroke three weeks after Vance moved out. Despite all of the bad blood she does still love her parents, so she attended the funeral. Her mother was livid upon seeing her daughter, "mangled and unpresentable" (her words) and disowned Vance from the family. Heartbroken, Vance returned home, gathered everything she had from her crappy apartment, and left for a larger coastal city where she could start her life anew. 

Getting adjusted to a brand new massive area was tough for her at first, but Vance was able to find room in a communal living society where she fit in very well. She got a job delivering handcrafted pizzas by skating around the city, where she was always able to garner big tips. Finding new friends to party and hang out with was as easy as going to practice at the skatepark or surfing at the beach. Vance kept her friend circle large and was up for pretty much any activity. She stayed out of trouble - barely - and had the time of her life.

One day Vance was delivering a pizza, normal day, but the delivery address was her favorite beach. She skated quickly and was able to find the recipient quietly watching the waves lap at the shore. She saw a small, fluffy cat sitting by themself. When the cat turned to her, Vance was taken aback by their brilliant blue eyes. The cat thanked her for the pizza and gave her a hefty tip, with Vance leaving stuttering and blushing slightly.

This continued pretty much every other week with Vance immediately attempting to make advancements that were unrequited by the cat, who she learned as being named Moka. On one fateful day, Vance also bought cheese sticks and soda with Moka's order, and asked him if she could relax and enjoy his company. Moka was so enthralled that he accepted the offer, and their courtship began from then on.
