"What if I fail? What then?"
Personality
Roach is a generally soft-spoken, anxious person, often keeping to themself and scarcely socializing outside of necessity. There is usually a nervousness hanging about them that is easy for folks to pick up on. They have a hard time speaking, their voice often soft during normal conversation. Usually, there is so much going on in their own head that they don't know what to do with themself. They are a deeply paranoid person, often letting their anxiety rule over them and their decision making. There is a softness to them, though it is under many layers of trauma and heartbreak.
A deep anger resides in Roach under the surface, constantly bubbling and begging to be let loose. However, their own anger scares them, enough to keep it subdued for the time being. During moments of intense emotion, it tends to rear its head, leading to Roach lashing out much more intensely than they ever mean to. Regret always follows soon after.
Roach has autism, and has a number of behaviors associated with it. They stim often when not in their armor, tapping their knuckles together and chewing on the hem of their sleeves being the most common ones. Special interests inlude insects and technology. They are often overstimulated by noises and smells, and wear headphones a lot of the time they are out of their armor.
As Lacrymosa, their villain persona, their personality shifts dramatically, with their inner anger taking center stage. Lacrymosa is cunning and cruel, ruthless and persistant. Roach lets loose more in the armor, though their paranoia keeps them in check. They have a one-track mind as Lacrymosa, focused only on their endgame of destroying the Farm and the people who hurt them, at any cost.
Appearance
Roach is a very petite person, standing at 4'11" with a smaller frame. There are freckles and moles covering their entire body, contrasting starkly against their pale skin. They often look sickly, with deep purple circles under their eyes and a slight flush constantly on their cheeks. Various scars are littered over their body, the most striking of which being a Y-shaped autopsy scar on their torso. It starts below their collarbone and goes down to below their navel. Their body is also covered in bright orange tattoos, the markings of a Regene, that resemble circuit lines and have an insect motif.
Their eyes are a grassy green, with slight hints of a Void-like hue to it when the light hits them just right. Their hair is naturally a dark warm brown color, though they bleach their bangs to as pure of a white as they can. The front of their hair usually feels terrible to the touch. Their hair is cut with kitchen scissors without the use of a mirror and looks exactly as one would expect from that. Wardrobe usually consists of a t-shirt, worn jeans, their hunter green jacket, and sneakers. They usually get their clothes from dumpsters and thrift stores when they can afford it.
Relationships
Ricardo Ortega
A contentious relationship if there ever was one, Ricardo and Roach have been "friends" for over ten years, though Roach secretly had a crush on him during their Sidestep days. Those feelings only were revealed recently, though, as Roach was convinced Ricardo could never love them due to them being a Regene. The two of them are often seen bickering with each other, though there is a clear fondness in the arguements. They need couples' therapy.
Wei Chen
Another one of Roach's partners, Wei was once a figure they would frequently butt heads with, with them assuming he hated them. It was only after tey resurfaced post-Heartbreak that feelings were discussed, and the two have entered a tentative relationship, despite Wei knowing full well about Roach's status as both a Regene and the villain Lacrymosa. He is conflicted on how to feel about it all, especially when he knew before Ricardo did. These two also need couples' therapy.
Eden
Roach's puppet, Eden is the name they gave the comatose body they found several years ago on life support in a local hospital. His brain had been completely wiped, an open canvas, and Roach took him to use as a puppet. They have taken special care of Eden, keeping him in shape and well dressed, as well as well liked. They view themself as very distinct and separate from Eden, though it is strangely comforting to them to be inside an AMAB body.
Daniel Sullivan
Daniel was a surprise for Roach. At first, they couldn't stand him, thinking he was only there to replace what they were to the Rangers. However, after being forcibly introduced by Ricardo, Roach grew to have a soft spot for the young hero. The two have a tentative friendship, where Roach is training him to be a better hero. It is something they are conflicted about, though a part of them hopes that making him stronger will mean someone will stop them.
Backstory
A lab-grown creation known as a Regene, Roach was first decanted in 2002, built to be a telepath. They were used as a sleeper agent in the field to gather data for the Farm. After years of torture and abuse from their handlers, they broke free of the Farm's clutches and made their way to Los Diablos, wanting to become a vigilante hero. They wanted to put some good back into the world, knowing intimately well how much evil there was under the surface. When they debuted, it was as the hero Sidestep, the name an attempt to hide the fact they were a telepath. They soon met Ricardo Ortega, a well known hero from the famous Rangers, who took a liking to them and brought them on as a consulatant to the Rangers. The public knew Sidestep as a vigilante, not as Ortega's sidekick.
In February of 2013, the Heartbreak incident occurred, and Roach was taken back to the Farm and presumed dead by the public at large. They gained the Outsider scar, forever feeling as if they would never fit into society at large, no matter how hard they tried. Once back at the Farm, they had their pain gate removed against their will, allowing them to fully feel every injury they sustain from thereon out. It took four years, but they did escape again, returning to Los Diablos since it was the only real home they had ever known. That was when they decided they weren't going to make any real change on the side of the angels, and made up their mind to debut as a villain.
It took years of preparation, but they did commission their armor from the great Dr. Mortum, who they made connections with through their puppet, Eden. However, just before they made their debut, they were discovered in their civilian attire by Ricardo Ortega, who had presumed them dead. Old feelings resurfaced, and soon Roach was asked to help assist the Rangers, which they hesitantly did. It wasn't very long after that Lacrymosa made their debut at the museum's opening gala event, making a fool of the Rangers and making their escape unscathed.
Present Day
After Lacrymosa's debut, Roach made their villain persona known as a thief, mostly stealing technology for Roach to study, as well as the occasional art and jewels for the hell of it. They are not known as a telepath, instead being known for the nanovores in their gauntlet. Their current base is an old abandoned water plant, and they live there full time due to their paranoia.
Through training him, Roach and Daniel have become much closer, though Roach still hesitates to call him a "friend." They have also begun (subconsciously) persuing romantic relations with Ricardo and Wei, though it is much easier for them to express their feelings to Wei than Ricardo. They were able to retrieve Dr. Mortum's gun from the auction and have a tentative agreement with Lady Argent to work on the regenerator together, with Angie being the one to keep the machine. Lacrymosa met Hollow Ground in person and avoided getting threaded, even getting a peek into HG's mind and seeing some old memories, before getting caught by Ricardo upon leaving and the two getting into a car crash. The last known whereabouts of Roach was at the Rangers' HQ, where they were broken out by Wei.
Trivia
The nickname "Roach" comes from Ricardo and Anathema. It was a joke nickname based on their love of insects, and was cemented when they were gifted a plushie of a roach by Anathema. They still have that plush to this day.
They love music and are constantly listening to it. Their favorite genres are rock, metal, alternative, and goth. Favorite bands include The Cure, Metallica, Depeche Mode, and Ghost. Their favorite song changes on the hour and is never consistant.
In versions where Roach is given a happy ending, they adopt many animals, naming all of them after different cutlery to match Wei's dog, Spoon. The exception is the many rats they care for, which are affectionaly referred to as the Spice Cabinet.
Their favorite color is green, their favorite food is any kind of pasta, and their favorite season is autumn.
Roach got their name, "Ryder," from the side of a semi truck. They thought the name sounded cool, despite the fact it came from a moving company.
