The white cheshire is a ghost/spirit created by death itself to collect the souls of those that just died and transfer them to the souls stream.
It is said that he used to be a normal cat like creature upon his creation, but his task drove him insane to a point where he just doesn't care anymore.
The smoke he appears from is said to be the "white light" you see when you die.
