⇀ TL;DR

Some weird cat-boy who'll buy your suffering from you in the form of painful momentos and objects with tragic histories. He seems like a nice, if somewhat ditzy man, but he has no one who's really close to him and he doesn't give up his secrets lightly. He's kinda being worshipped by a cult due to his psychic powers, and he's also being harassed by a detective who finds his ability to see visions simply from touching stuff to be really useful. Kind of a homebody. Probably deserves headpats.

⇀ Overview

Mionnjya is a young man who runs a store much like a pawn shop, but with something of a... twist.

Mio only purchases things with a history of sorrow attached to them. Lockets from old, dead lovers, the shoes of a child who didn't live past her second birthday, the old collar of a beloved pet... if it has a link to pain, Mio is interested in acquiring it. Sometimes, the owners of these items come to regret their choices, pay Mio back the money (with a little interest), and take them back into their possession. Sometimes Mio sells the items to various sorts of buyers - secret witches who need objects steeped in misery for their spell-craft, curious parties who like collecting things associated with a bit of bloodshed, and detectives looking for a break in their current case. And sometimes, when Mio's store is getting a bit too full and he needs to rotate things out, he'll take the 'best' items - the most cursed, the most broken, the most associated with tragedy - box them up, and make a call to a strange... organization, whose cloaked members will arrive in the dead of night and take his packages away. They always leave him a substantial amount of money in return, which Mio uses to continue pursuing his odd, mostly unprofitable business. Occasionally, these figures will leave orders for him, which he'll do his best to fulfill.

Otherwise, Mionnjya is a kind, but very plain man.

He gives off an aura of trustworthy affability that puts people who come into his store at ease. He's gentle, polite, smiles honestly, and is willing to listen to the often rambling stories of those who bring him things to sell. Part of the transaction is Mio being told what, exactly, this item means to the customer, and the process often ends up being therapeutic for the person who's trying to relieve themselves of their painful attachments. He has a way of getting even the cagiest and most reluctant people to talk about their suffering, and afterwords they often feel lighter. Freer. Like the sky has cleared up a bit, and like things might be different now. Despite this, Mio doesn't really have any... friends. In his own matters, he's emotionally distant, having a substantial amount of trouble getting close to people and forming connections. He's the sort of person who's delightful to have interactions with, but he never goes out and does anything, and similarly never pursues friendships with other people. Mionnjya seems almost... terrified of putting in the emotional labor of fostering deep connections, so he lets potential bonds slip away before they can become strong.

This causes him some anxiety, and sometimes he gets jealous of those around him who have people they can rely on.

He doesn't allow himself to dwell on that, however. Mionnjya has an extreme aversion to letting himself feel negative emotions because the environment he grew up in was so emotionally unstable. He's aware of the kind of effect overt anger and unpredictable rage can have on people, and he's terrified of becoming like his parents, a troubled couple who, whenever they were together, fought viciously. So, he scrubs himself clean of anything unpleasant, repressing his own feelings liberally and meaning that he can never do the self-analysis necessary to grow as a person. People who interact with Mionnjya for long enough tend to get the sense he's a bit... fake, and that's because he never lets others see his vulnerability. His feelings are too carefully curated in a way that's off-putting. If Mio could just admit that he's lonely, that he wants to cry, that he's in pain... there might be someone there to help him pick up the pieces. But he never does, so in the end he only offers comfort to others, and never puts himself in the position to receive it himself.

Top Moe Trait || He's very short, and has trouble reaching the top level of shelves in his store.

Mio's diamond-esque face and upturned eyes give him a perpetually alert look, which is complimented by his catlike ears that continually twitch in response to the small noises customers make when browsing his shop. Being a bit of a klutz, he often has small band-aids or scrape crossing his face, knees, and fingers, and his hair, the sort of steely blue-grey that water turns underneath a stormy sky, is usually in his eyes due to its messy cut. His ears are the same color, covered with a light dusting of soft fur, and like his long, silky tail, they're tipped with darker patches of polished stone blue. He wears two clips for decoration, providing a bit of contrast in his mostly monochromatic outfit. His shirt, pants, stockings, and shoes are run the spectrum from faded navy-blue to pale cyan, and Mionnjya favors garments with simple geometric patterns, such a diamonds and dotted lines. On his chest is a symbol of a crying eye, which is a bit of an unusual motif, and one he shares among his... common associates.

His most striking trait, however, is his profoundly crooked nose. Broken when he was a child, it was never treated properly, and now serves as a notable blemish on his otherwise cute features. He doesn't comment on it much, nor does he really respond when it's pointed out, but occasionally he'll rub at its bridge while he's staring out the window and thinking. He's pretty small and breakable looking in general, standing at a meager 5'5 despite being fully grown and having thin wrists, ankles, and limbs. As one might imagine given such a delicate frame, Mio doesn't just have no butt, he has a negative butt, and he buys his shorts from the children's section.

He's often found smiling, and his general demeanor is welcoming. His sleeves sometimes flap when he gestures, and he often doesn't reveal his hands, even when doing simple tasks like pouring tea or cleaning his store. This is, in part, because of his powers - he's pretty careful about what he touches, especially in a shop full of things responsive to his abilities.

⇀ Important Notes

  • Mio has a crooked nose from when it was broken when he was young.
  • His ears are short and very fluffy!

Miscellaneous

⇀ Symbol

Waterdrop - Mionnjya's work requires him to immerse himself in the world of sorrows. Rain can be both sorrowful and comforting, depending on the situation, and tears can emerge from both misery and joy. Mio is both happy and unhappy, a presence of both warmth and sadness - and like a droplet of water that's fallen, it's easy for him to disappear into the crowd and be forgotten.

⇀ Abilities

Upon touching an object with a painful history, Mio gets elaborate visions about what happened to associate it with such sorrow. These normally manifest in hallucination-like sequences, where the past intersects with the present and Mio sees a scene overlaid his current reality. This can, obviously, be highly disorienting, and it affects Mio's mental state enough that it's possible for him to not quite realize what's happening until it's over. Because of this, he's careful about what he touches, as he never really knows what might send him into a trance. He's particularly cautious in his store, as a simple act of sorting jewelry can lead to him listening in on a vicious lover's quarrel. When his abilities first manifested, he only ever acted as an outside observer to the scenes, but with training he's come to be able to understand the emotions involved. Mio is very secretive about this ability, and doesn't tell his customers what he can actually do - though honestly, it's quite likely none of them would believe him, anyway...

⇀ Trivia

  • Has terrible allergies in the spring, and his sneezes are small and absolutely adorable.
  • His living space is terribly cluttered because he feels more comfortable around a bit of mess.

Nomi [ Employer? ]

Since learning about his abilities, the self-styled 'Great Detective Nomi' frequently visits Mio for intelligence. Sometimes, she'll ask him to get the read on evidence she's collected, and sometimes she'll browse his collection, picking his brain and seeing if anything he knows matches up with her current case. Mionnjya wouldn't normally give away his customers secrets, but his mysterious cloaked associates have specifically instructed him to keep an eye on Nomi. Something about her is of interest to them and, therefore, it behooves everyone involved for Mio to become her friend.

Mio isn't quite sure if he actually likes Nomi or not. On the one hand, she's pretty scary, and she has a way better read on him than he'd like. On the other, he gets the sense that she's lonely too... and there's something about her demeanor that's uniquely fascinating to him. Both have powers that involve their eyes, and both are associated with water in some capacity. Perhaps they're suited for each other in some strange way?
