“You sought only the truth,” said the voice. “Such a pity truth has no place among her lies.”

“Delusions of a dying man,” said Zenir; each syllable brought his decrepit body pain. “Torment me not, my suffering will soon end.”

“Ripe in your own filth, and yet you mock me?” it retorted, still no corporeal form to be found. “I have come to deliver you, to bring meaning to your insignificant existence.”

“Speak not in cryptic messages,” replied Zenir. He prostrated his body then, turning his head toward the sound of the voice.

“Cophiah seeks not only to uphold stability, but to control what is rightfully man’s domain. The pawns within the Wizard Tower are but one of her tools,” the voice began. From the darkness came the form of a man; his features were cloaked by the looming darkness, shrouded by ever-shifting shadow. “There is a balance to be kept in this world, and I am afraid my dear Cophiah has undermined it with her constant meddling.”

Zenir mustered what little strength was left within his broken body to look upon the figure. “Nihil,” he mumbled. “I was never much of a religious man—and yet you come, at my hour of death.”

“Even now your revelation has begun to eat away at the very foundation of the Wizard Tower,” said Nihil. “I offer you a second chance, but now with my blessing. Tell the world what you have found and I shall bestow upon you power unimaginable.”

No more words were exchanged between the two. Zenir outstretched his hand toward the shadow, and upon his palm nestled a golden hourglass.
