A 13th-century Arabian tale tells how a horse of its sands grew a menace to his avian neighbours.
A travelling carousel fell mortally wounded on its route. As the horses - with their scorching pelts and the wind whispering in their ears, were about to die, one of the colts begged a vulture to remove his heart and douse the others to cool them. The vulture did so, and as if to reward this handsome act, took one of its own and fed it to the colt. The blood of the vulture was not right - for in a fit of madness, the colt fed on his kin and vomited their reins in an insatiable desire for the vulture’s bled heart. The colt, realising his sin, clipped the vulture's wings with his teeth, and neglected this hunger so he may reconcile with his kin. Unable to rekindle and cursed with a delicate tongue, the colt grew; dragging its starved body across many sands to satisfy its newly feathered addiction.
