Anaïs, formerly Apolline, comes from a long line of nightwalkers. Born in 1988, her parents died to vampire hunters during the Dawn of Revival. She was left to be taken care of by a family friend who ended up teaching her the intricacies of magic in more depth; being demi-human, Apolline already had an aptitude for magic, but she found it easier to understand with the new magic system.
In 2012, her mentor activated some kind of spell and Apolline's soul was fractured and ended up being split into two separate beings: Alice and Anaïs. With their mentor finding no way to reverse the spell and no cure in sight, she ran away. Alice and Anaïs both stuck together but eventually went their separate ways later down the line. While Alice suddenly gained an interest in "what makes someone alive", Anaïs ended up joining the Assassin's Guild. After reconsidering what she truly wanted to do, she quickly ran away from the Guild overnight and tried to go back to her old life.
Anaïs stops at nothing to get what she wants; she's playful, flirty and ambitious, but it's pretty easy for her to get frustrated once things don't go the way she wants them to. She managed to secure a somewhat lavish lifestyle over the years by maintaining connections (though she's not exactly fond of those people) even through the war economy. She always puts herself first, yet she's still pleasant and willing to help those in need. Generally, she only meddles with human affairs if she has something to gain out of it, so whether or not she's expecting anything in return is unclear. Her habit of stealing over the decades has led to a dozen governments placing a high bounty on her. She thinks it's pretty funny
