Dr. Pastiche is a seemingly cold and unfeeling member of the staff team .. and you'd be correct ! They more or less only care about the "benefits" which in their case is information. You could potentially find out which of the reject students have the potential to "change this world" !! Those exiled from society could have been out of fear rather than incompetence, no ?

They already have a decent amount of funding due to their roots, and pay for a lot of equipment .. out of pocket. One such "pieces of equipment" is Opaline .. a sentient doll often used to demonstrate anatomy of summons [constructs given life]

Also, they tend to focus their studies on anatomy & how that affects different species' strengths, weaknesses, abilities, etc. Dr. Pastiche's extensive knowledge on it could raise eyebrows, but since they're a "science specialist" .. it'd make sense, right ?
