Satoru is a Despair that Yui met in the ruins of a destroyed city during the aftermath of The Tragedy and promptly began traveling with. Satoru presents himself as a kind and somewhat aloof person, despite being a Despair, and gives off a friendly and almost harmless air. This is completely intentional and is how Satoru tricks his victims into a false sense of safety. Satoru will sometimes say things rather jarring compared to his somewhat normal persona, however this too is intentional, to not seem as if he is acting too fake. Satoru is surprised that Yui can see through his false persona and tries to get her to see the fun in despair.

Not much is known of Satoru's life before he became a Despair, and it's possible of what little is known is false, as Satoru is known to give vague and conflicting answers. He states that he had a typical upbringing with normal parents and was an only child, however he has also implied that he might have a brother and/or sister, though he quickly dismisses it when brought up. Satoru says that he went to a normal high school, and went to a college after but dropped out because he became disinterested. When asked what he had been going to college for Satoru replied 'Psychology... or maybe it was ethics'. He also states that he had been interested in studying the effects of pollution on the ocean, but that it was a 'stupid idea'.

After meeting him in the Wastelands, Yui brought Satoru back with her to be rehabilitated using her experimental method. Once the world returned to semi-normal and Hope's Peak reopened, Yui hired Satoru to work at the university alongside her.

-Satoru's name means 'daybreak'.
-It's possible Satoru is not his real name, but one he took on after becoming a Despair
-Satoru seems to be very fond of chocolate
-If Satoru actually went to school for psychology it would explain why he was so good at manipulating
-Satoru dislikes most Despairs very 'forward' and 'pushy' approach to making people do twisted things and prefers a more gentle and subtle approach. While it takes longer to get results, all of their actions were voluntary and not due to pressure, thus making the person less able to write off what they did.
-Satoru is very afraid of the Junk Monokumas, and admits to frequent nightmares about them
