About

Dimxe Brandel was born in to the third generation of Brandel carpenters. A close-knit family of wood craftsmen, they weren't entirely enthused about her seemingly innate ability to set things on fire. She's bounced around between tutors, schools, and temples, but no one has been successful in taming her magic yet — particularly not Dimxe herself.

Appearance

She’s very short, and commonly gets mistaken for a halfling (“yes, well, I am on my father’s side!”). Her weight is also something people like to comment on; she’s not sure why, particularly, as she’s always thought of herself as strong. She loves her hair, too! It’s dark brown and wavy, and falls just past her shoulders. She likes to wear flowy, fancy clothing! (Well, when she can.)

Backstory

From an early age, any strong emotion was associated with an outburst of magic. At age four, she immolated a nearly-complete kitchen set (chairs, table, and all) in a tantrum over not being able to drink Chaim's beer. Her parents immediately elected to hire a magical tutor. Stenin tried his damndest, but she unfortunately left him with several singed robes, more than enough headaches for a lifetime, and a whole lot of burned books.

Next, they tried her at the Brieq Sho Academy for Magical Learning, a wizarding school. That... went about as well as expected. Dimxe couldn't learn spells from scrolls, books, teaching... they just seemed to spring to her mind fully-formed. After an attempt at a late-night study session ended with her as a sheep destroying the priceless herb garden, she was sent home with a note in her hands and tears in her eyes. Her family took her in with mild disappointment and signed her on at the nearest abbey to learn clericking, thinking she might perhaps follow in the footsteps of her grandfather. She spent two years there unsuccessfully trying to forge a connection to the divine. When she was placed with the newest class of five year olds, she became so embarrassed that she spontaneously combusted an entire roomful of people's clothing. She was sent home shortly afterward with a new note and a handkerchief.

At their wits' end, her parents contacted her grandfather, Gilbert. Dimxe was sent off with her bags for a third time to his apartments in Waterdeep. She stayed with him for two years, enjoying his experience-based teaching style, and reforged a connection with her second cousin Berryn Eldrinn, whom she'd last encountered when she was home on break from Brieq Sho to attend a family reunion. Together, they traveled to Candlekeep in an effort to discover a means to improve his health. In the meantime, she chipped away at Berryn's stony exterior. (She's not... through... yet. But she's trying.)

Berryn made the decision to travel back to Secomber to reintroduce herself to her family. In that last month, Gilbert completed his research, but found his health and mind failing faster than ever. In those last weeks Dimxe found herself as alone as she'd ever been. With his dying breath, he requested that she hide his research notes somewhere safe. At a loss for what to do she begged a student to help her Send a message to Berryn: "Berri, Grandpa is... dead. He gave me something I need to hide. I need your help. I don't know what to do. Headed to Waterdeep."

It was a hard month of travel. She is really, really looking forward to seeing her cousin again.

Berryn Brandel

Berryn is far and away Dimxe's favorite living family member. Dimxe thinks the absolute world of her, especially after spending a year in her company. She wants terribly to impress her, and will do anything in her power to make it so.

I don't know how to build no paper houses, without them falling down. without them falling down. Some days i feel like a hero, but heroes need a villain, and I have only friends. And I don't have a stamp left to my name, so how will they hear what I say — when everything's returned, I guess that they'll just have to burn. But I'm scared of fire, yeah I'm, scared of fire and this all requires some kind of lighter. And I'm scared of dreaming so I keep receding — why can't I stay breathing in the dark?
