Toggle spoiler for backstory.

Tim Cameron (age 12), formerly very close with his older brother Abel, begins to feel bitter and lonely once Abel enters high school. Abel discovers live vlogging and enjoys recording his life at home, which bothers Tim immensely, as Abel continuously teases him on camera for his friends to watch. One day, Abel walks in on Tim touching himself, and mocks him for it, resulting in a brutal beating from an enraged Tim. The brothers' father, Allistor, keeps Tim at home so he would not try to beat up Abel again at school.

Allistor brings home two sickly ducklings as a way to bring the brothers back together, and Tim immediately finds joy in his new friend, whom he names Yolk. Abel names his duckling Anne, after his girlfriend and the individual Tim has a crush on, but neglects it and leaves it to die. Abel decides to borrow Yolk as a substitute to show Anne, and leaves for school. Tim follows Abel to school despite the fact he is not supposed to be there, and witnesses Abel handing Yolk to Anne to let her carry it around for the rest of the school day. Tim interprets this as Abel giving Yolk away for good, and leaves an anonymous note in Anne's locker to meet him at the restrooms out in the field after school.

Anne shows up but is quickly disgusted once she realizes it was Tim who invited her to go. She refuses to return Yolk and refers to Tim rudely, most likely out of the fact that Abel talks poorly of him at school. Tim is angered once more, but goes as far as to bludgeon her to death in the bathroom with a bat he found in the sports closet. He kills Yolk as well for 'betraying him.' He begins to cry until a janitor finds him and the body.

Tim is kept in his house until decisions are made, and is introduced to a psychiatrist named Peggy. Peggy becomes close to both brothers. Before departing for her Christmas vacation, she gives Tim and Abel a music box and journal, respectively. After realizing how much he enjoyed talking to people, Tim begins to crave for more company, and starts to have conversations with Abel, albeit they are late at night and have a door separating them. Tim thinks that Abel is listening to him purely to make amends and rehash their childhood friendship, but in reality, Abel is recording Tim's responses so he can learn to protect himself from him, and so he can use the information to start the journalism career he really wants. Shortly after, Tim is tried as a juvenile for second-degree murder, and is sentenced to prison for fifteen years.

While Tim is away, Abel begins to contact editors and publishers in hopes of getting his name out in the field. He is finally taken under Timothy Harrison (ironically nicknamed Tim). Harrison writes articles and books about child psychology, using Abel's information in some parts. Abel brings back his vlogging hobby and begins his occupation as a journalist. He marries a woman named Arielle, who becomes pregnant. Although Abel is moved out, he still lives in town and does his work at Allistor's home (claiming that Arielle distracts him when he works at home).

Tim (age 27) comes home after fifteen years and keeps to himself. Abel, feeling a bit guilty about their childhoods together, vows to help him reconnect with society and become successful. He encourages Tim to take walks around the town, which Tim does, to Abel's pleasure. Unknowingly to Abel, Tim is watching and following a high school senior, Paige Lewis. Tim witnesses Paige getting mugged at gunpoint, and is taken in by the police for information. Tim claims he doesn't know anything, but in reality, he kept the information secret so he could personally find and punish the mugger himself. He kills the thief and takes back Paige's wallet.

After looking around in the town's bookstore, Tim finds Harrison's book, finding amusement in how they share a name. He discovers his personal childhood thoughts being sourced back to Abel, and steals the book so he can confront Abel about it. Tim throws the book at Abel when he arrives home, not angry because of how his childhood thought process was leaked, but because Abel tricked him into thinking that they could reconnect and be friends again, like old times, just for his own benefit. Tim leaves Allistor's house, wanting to leave his family behind and focus solely on 'claiming' Paige. Abel's guilt increases, and he realizes that letting Tim loose around town is a terrible idea, especially since he is clearly not okay.

There are news of a store clerk being killed a few days later, and Abel just knows it's the work of Tim. He shows up at the scene, only to find a mocking message directed at Abel written on the wall.

Abel knows he needs to find his brother and get him help, feeling that it is his responsibility to get Tim under control, since he tormented him as a child and exploited him. He meets with the police, and one day, Paige arrives in the station, crying and telling them that a masked man tried to kidnap her. Abel and the police come to a conclusion that Tim lusts after Paige and wants to take her somewhere far away. Abel requests Paige to help them find Tim, to which she agrees reluctantly.

And so it began.
