Childhood

Logan was born to a young couple named Maya and Phillip Brooks. At the time of their son's birth Phillip was working as an architect while Maya was finishing her time at law school; however, Logan rarely remembers his father as the two separated when he was only a few years old. From there Logan was raised by his newly-single, working mother in a small high-rise apartment. He bounced between family members until he was old enough to be sent off to grade school, and in turn, start attending after-school programs while waiting for his mother's arrival. His mother did what she could, but as a public defender in downtown Detroit she had to spend a lot of her time buried in her work. In turn, much of Logan's childhood was spent entertaining himself.

To make matters worse he often struggled with ostracization from his peers given his mixed skin tone and lighter hair color. But despite her limited time and attention, Logan and his mother maintained a fairly good relationship. As he got older Logan would often make her breakfast on an early Saturday morning after she'd had a late night at the office, or make sure the coffee was running before he headed to the school bus. And, no matter what, she always made sure to schedule in a little bit of extra time for him-- even if it cost her precious sleep.

It wasn't until Logan was a teen that his vitiligo set in, adding yet another layer of complication and mixed experiences around his race and skin color. He struggled with this quite frequently in his teen years and had difficulty finding a place that he could really fit in. Eventually he found that niche in the high-school's track team... the physical activity did a lot for his building aggression and frustration, and allowed him to focus his attention on his grades and his schoolwork.

The Accident

Whatever career he might have been gearing up towards in athletics was cut short by a tragic accident involving a drunk driver. Logan was out with his joy riding, a common thing among him and his peers, they were struck when a man ran a red light. The damage to passenger side seriously injured Logan's right leg, and, shortly after, it was deemed inoperable and had to be amputated.

It took a long time for Logan to adjust to the amputation of his leg, especially with his typical coping mechanism so roughly stripped from him. Luckily, his support network remained strong and he was fortunate enough to be paired with a physical therapist that challenged his negative thinking. It was in this time, as he spent countless hours visiting specialists and doctors of all sorts, that he decided there was a stark lack of physicians of color. Following in his mother's stubborn footsteps, he decided to change that dynamic.

As soon as Logan graduated he headed off to school to start his first four years of undergrad in pursuit of his ideals. It was over this time that he learned his incredible focus and steady hand was lining him up for a career in the surgery department. He applied for multiple universities and, after several rejections and even re-applications, he got accepted into Duke in North Carolina. Throughout his college years He spent very little time with his peers, though he did enjoy the company of his classmates during study sessions, and got most of his social quotas met with late nights, heavy textbooks, and denny's food.

Fast forwarding through the years Logan continued to progress (with occasional setbacks); from student to intern, intern to resident, and finally resident to attending. Throughout his education Logan fluctuated between mid-to-to high ranking grades compared to his peers; which he found rather remarkable given his added challenges. It was during his time as a graduate that he flourished as an individual, as well. He joined several university clubs and mingled with others of like background, spending a lot of time interfacing with various social justice groups and emboldening his own experience and beliefs. It was during this time that he was able to get a better prosthetic (with the aid of a crowdsourcing fund raiser) and began jogging again.

After graduation and successful certification Logan returned home to Detroit to begin his career where his roots were, hoping to give back to his community. Unfortunately, he returned to a rather difficult task... During his 13 years away from his home town the structure and economy of Detroit was undergoing collapse, and things were about to get a lot worse.

The Outbreak

As a surgeon in the hospital Logan was on the front lines when the outbreak began, and his mother was one of the casualties as physicians and doctors struggled to figure out what was gripping the towns. Detroit's large population meant it was overcome quickly, and Logan was forced to retreat with a small group of strangers who had survived the hospital. They headed north, hoping that the numbers would dwindle further outside of the city, and that the great lakes would provide ample supplies of water and food.

As the groups dynamics began to break down, so did Logan's tolerance of others. The loss of his mother weighed heavy on his previously optimistic disposition and the wear and tear of his forced companion's attitudes sent him back to his more isolative tendencies. At the height of the team's dissolving cohesion things became violent, and Logan split before the matter got too much worse. It became an "every man for himself" mentality, and Logan adapted to it quickly.

He lost track of how many days had occurred since the outbreak, but as the hordes got worse and worse, Logan reluctantly had to admit he was outnumbered and out-manned-- seeking refuge in Ontario, Logan initially sought affiliation with the faction known as "Maelstrom" for their notorious strength and independence. Unfortunately, his physical prowess fell short of their requirements and consequently, he was turned away from their encampment. Luckily a member of the "Brentwood" faction was kind and willing enough to encourage him to join their rankings. Begrudgingly Logan had no choice but to accept their offer, lest he be forced to return to the city and ally with the Citadel.
