Skallic

Kalika's dam. While he is on friendly terms with Veritan, Kalika's sire, they don't talk often unless it's related to their son. Kalika was the result of a drunken one night stand so Skallic and Veritan never really got to know each other.

Skallic was an orphan, and one that was unfortunately never adopted and left on his own once he came of age. Having no money and no practical knowledge, he was essentially forced to live in a ramshackle "house" with other lower-class valon while he made a living doing odd jobs no one else wanted to do. However, after giving birth to Kalika and informing Veritan of his new son, Veritan acquired for him a better home in which to properly raise Kalika. He now works as a sewage worker, but he prefers it since it means he has stable pay.

He had an interest in history but never learned to read, yet spent most of his time in libraries anyway, "reading" books. He also "writes", which is to say, doodles on paper and pretends it's writing. He actually learns how to do both of these things once Kalika is old enough to teach him - he could have asked Veritan or Musha to teach him, but he didn't feel he had the right. He continues to spend his time in libraries, rereading books for real, and writes a daily diary with the occasional story when he can't sleep.

However, despite the thrill of being able to read all the books he never could before, he is very lonely and frequently comes off as distant and lost in his own daydreams. He is not a very happy person and generally avoids all social situations. While he seems slightly off, there is nothing actually wrong with him.

Eventually, he becomes romantically involved with the elderly librarian Musha since he'd always been there for him at the library and Skallic came to love him, despite their age difference.
