ABOUT
While most Dyrnids are very posh within their culture, Luz never had enough proper social training before she was lost from her dignity. She loves learning about new cultures, and often her curiosity overrides the species' tendency to be skittish.
Her travels have taken her all sorts of places, even over seas - she did NOT like being stuck on a ship, as large as it was. To take the trip again would require a LOT of coercion. She interacts with humans quite a bit, sometimes using her magic in exchange for her favourite fruits. She likes wearing fresh flowers in her hair as well, even if they don't last as long as she'd like.
DYRNIDS
Dyrnid information
GENERAL
Dyrnids are a species from a story I started writing in 2009. In the narrative, they're long-lived creatures with human-level sapience, intelligent enough to form their own cultures, and an unparalleled affinity for soul magic. Right here and now, though, they're just a cute sparklebeast species.
They're large quadruped mammals about the size of draft horses, although not so heavy since their bulk is really mostly fluff; their lifespan is around 80 years, with sexual maturity being around 25 years.
SOCIETY & CULTURE
They’re omnivorous but they mostly eat fruits and nuts, some tubers, and the leaves of succulents; they need a lot of sugar.
Dyrnids consider it rude to move around a lot, so there's not much body language; instead, they use vocalisations to convey general emotion and intent, and telepathy for complex dialogue.
They consider themselves very dignified so they don't like to run or appear startled, which is why they rarely hunt. They sometimes scavenge abandoned kills if they're fresh, or hunt passerine birds, but fruits are still their main staple. A group of dyrnids is called a "dignity". (I'm not joking, they picked that out themselves. Dyrnid more like DORKnid. more like dyrNERD)
Although they pretend to be very posh, in reality they’re skittish goofballs and not very confrontational. As a sapient species, they can't exactly be domesticated, but some dyrnids form close bonds with humans. They can learn human languages and even speak them to some degree. They're a huge fan of human confectioneries.
REPRODUCTION
Dyrnids are actually a hermaphroditic species; there is only one set of genitalia available to a dyrnid, outside of mutations. They do have a vague concept of gender that occasionally lines up with the human gender binary, and most--though not all--dyrnids who interact with humans pick a gendered pronoun for convenience.
Dyrnids don't have many natural predators so their babies are born hairless with closed eyes and no horns, and remain helpless for at least the first year of their life. Infant dyrnids are called niddies and are super cute.
