backstory
Val was born to a family of laborers in Inperaza, the capital of the Luesinian Empire. They struggled to get by, but tried to make the best of it. That is until one day, Val's father died in an accident at work. Left as the sole caretaker, Val's mother died of exhaustion soon after.
Due to their sudden passing, Val's parents had no opportunity to find someone to take care of her, and Val wound up living on the streets. Ironically, that's where she met someone who taught her how to get by, a fellow daemon named Thess. Together they survived in the nooks and crannies of the city. That is, until one day when a nobleman named Edvardo found Val, and adopted her, without much say from Val.
Val quickly found out the man only took her in for the optics. Edvardo wanted to present himself as the savior of this poor girl, taken from the streets to be given a new life in luxury. Yet, when there were no visitors or galas to drag her along to, he would not spare her a glance. Upon realizing that, Val began sneaking out to her old haunts. News of her new caretaker spread, however, and soon she was looked at with hostility by her former comrades. Including Thess.
Edvardo found out about Val's escapades when she got arrested by the city guard for getting in a fight. He was furious that she besmirched his image like that, and threatened to disown her. Val, tired of being thought of only for appearances' sake, told him to do just that. Edvardo did, and Val packed her bags. She did not just leave the nobleman's house, however, but fled Inperaza altogether.
personality
Val is a pragmatic and fairly straightforward person, stating her thoughts plainly and disliking it when others beat around the bush. Due to a past living on the streets, she is not opposed to committing criminal acts when necessary. However, she refuses to steal from or harm the less fortunate, preferring to target the rich instead.
She is very distrustful of strangers, and does not like to express her emotions, as she hates how it makes her feel weak and vulnerable. She is extremely wary of giving out information about herself that could be used against her.
abilities
As a daemon, Val is able to use magic that can bend or break the laws of physics. However, the greater the defiance of natural law, the more straining it becomes to use this magic. Val's magic is a hodgepodge of different tricks and techniques she learned in Inperaza.
Since Val didn't have the opportunity to be taught more refined control over her magic, she isn't able to to use her magic for large-scale changes or summonings. Instead, she uses it mainly to amplify her own abilities, to grant herself extra speed, for example, or toughen her skin so she can better take blows.
