Adam

Adam was once a revered knight, 

loved and respected by all.

but the kingdom fell 

and he was imprisoned.

His limbs removed cruelly, his sword taken,

and held deep in the bowels of the castles dungeons. 

When time ceased to be tangible, a devil arrived

and offered him a pact to regain all he'd lost. 

"Come closer" Adam said tiredly, "I am weak now, and my eyes fail me." The devil obliged,

and Adam consumed him. "of all the bones I was without, you forgot I had teeth" 

Dungeon keepers from then on would have a custom. When they heard the dull tik tik tik of bones against the dungeon stones, you take your tongue and count your teeth, and do not meet the eye of the red-headed ghoul until they pass.
