Valerie is the corruption of a normal short-eared owl, fueled by anxiety and low self-esteem. She hides herself away in a dark forest, away from prying eyes, to calm down and recover her senses. She is all too aware of how people view her intelligence when not locked in this form, but is powerless to change how she is perceived.
