APPEARANCE

A quiet wolf who is nothing extraordinary in build or manner, but has been altered by the island. Where once she wore a dust-brown coat and hazel eyes, Enid is now a mix of earthen grey, brown, and black, with eyes red as blood.

She often carries herself low, unsure of her every move. Exhaustion is obvious in her drawn features that are consumed by a listless melancholy she can never seem to shake.

A very mild wolf, Enid is the picture of meekness. She rarely raises her voice even when upset and is more likely to go belly-up when confronted than she is to stand her ground. She’s a pacifist who would never raise a claw to another wolf, packmate or not. Violence is not in her nature, and seeing it in others repulses her. Enid is a sensitive, dispirited creature. She makes decisions with her heart, logic takes a backseat in favor of how she feels.

There are wolves who assumed that Enid is mute in the past, due to her taciturn nature, and the fact that she hardly ever starts a conversation on her own. She prefers to listen rather than speak, especially since she doesn’t feel she has much of worth to say. She’ll swear on her life that her gut is never, ever wrong when she gets a bad feeling about something, but lacks the courage to voice her opinions. Better to be silent than wrong.

One can always tell when she’s upset, because she’ll all but shut down and withdraw into herself, refusing to speak to anyone until the mood passes. She’s become adept at fading into the background, and tends towards inaction - especially when she’s alone. She hesitates to make decisions and is fearful of consequences. As much as she wants to change, reluctant to be useless and incompetent forever… Enid is a weak-willed wolf. She's her own worst enemy, obsessing over fears, flaws and insecurities and sabotaging any attempts at improvement.

History

Lastborn of a litter of three, brought into the world during a turbulent time. Enid and her siblings were born when the pack was still whole, when magic and myth were still only whispers woven between the listening trees. They didn’t mean much to their mother or their grandparents, who viewed them as tall tales, but Enid… well, she was a curious creature. She asked questions constantly, despite her family’s repeated insistence that magic was something she shouldn’t pay mind to - but she wanted to learn about the unknown, not turn a blind eye to it! What was so bad about magic that made everyone hate it so much? Why didn’t anyone else want to try and understand?

But there wasn’t much she could learn as only a pup; and when mother vanished, magic became the last thing on Enid’s mind. All three siblings were stricken by Aida’s disappearance, but Enid took the loss especially hard. Of the trio, Enid was the one who shared the closest bond with their mother, sticking close to her side and talking to her while her littermates were off exploring. When that familiar presence was ripped away without an ounce of warning, it all but shattered her. Everyone searched and searched, but it was no use. Aida was declared missing, presumed dead. Her mother was dead.

The shaken pups were placed in their grandparents' care, and Enid did not speak for a long, long time after that. Monroe and Varrigan did their best to comfort and coax her into talking to them, but not even they could get her to speak more than a few mumbled sentences at a time. This silence continued to hold into her adolescence, and only made it more poignant when the murmurs she’d once been so enamored with trickled back into her quiet world.

Maybe it was because of her silence that Monroe didn’t notice she turned an ear to the Red Wolf. They would argue Varrigan, who was less subtle - insisting that he shouldn't listen to Malaysia’s rabble. They claimed magic was nothing but trouble and an insult to the natural way of the Pack. Enid… couldn’t help but disagree, again. Magic sounded so fascinating, and still largely an unknown concept to her. Slowly, Enid’s curious nature began to resurface and she listened more and more to the murmurs of change rippling through the pack. Monroe seemed to take this second wind as a good thing, a sign they could withstand the tide so long as they stayed together. A knot formed in the back of Enid’s throat faster than she could speak, and the contradiction on her tongue weighs heavy unsaid.

The massacre was a horrific, though, even Enid had to admit that. For all of Malaysia’s promises and grand designs to culminate in something so violent, it settled heavily with the knot in her throat. But it wasn’t enough to make her distrust magic as vehemently as the rest of Tündes. She kept her wonderings private to avoid raising her protective sibling’s ire after such a heinous display of greed. When Juron fell ill and Varrigan suggested magic in lieu of any other option, Enid wanted to support him, but could not find the words. Before she could overcome her silence Monroe was shouting, shutting the idea down without even considering it. Why? Why would they do that? They had a chance to save him, even if it might not work, they still could have tried!

Aida didn’t get a chance. Juron did, and we threw it away.

Losing grandfather was hard enough, but then Varrigan left too, and Enid withdrew again. Monroe didn’t understand. They thought she was grieving, and she was, but she was also angry; at her littermate and herself. She should have said something, and Monroe should have trusted Varrigan, the only one who tried every possible solution to save their grandfather. Enid hardly had any reaction to anything that happened after her brother ran north - the Summit, the continuous deaths, the Sickness, it all washed over her like water over a stone. She listened, but she did not rouse. Why should she? Why pay any mind to the hateful words that the Tündes hissed among themselves about wolves who used to be their family?

Family.

That word struck a chord after months of seclusion, stirring Enid from the stupor she’d fallen into. Only one question was burning in her mind: was Varrigan alive? It lit a fire under her paws, she ached to sprint north and ask the first Kol she found if her brother was alright - but she couldn’t. Monroe wouldn’t like it… but surely they hadn’t forgotten that the wolves they loath so much also harbor their sibling. Didn’t they worry for him?

I have to know. Quietly, while the rest of the pack hurried to prepare for the harsh winter descending over the island, Enid resolves to find out.

For the first time since she was a pup, she has a purpose. She has to know if her brother is safe. With or without Monroe… but in the end, the answer gives her no solace. When the kolwolf Pekhat told her of Varrigan’s death, the knowledge only brought Enid more strife. She and Monroe were truly all that was left of their family. Ever since that day she has felt as if the island moved on without her, seasons and more deaths passing her by. The world didn’t need her in it, and she didn’t want to be anyway. All Enid wanted to do was sleep.

The Tundes divided and Enid, feeling lost with indecision - and unable to follow Monroe to join Yetta’s crusade against Kol - fled south after a tearful goodbye. And there she has remained, listless without anything to ground her. The wave only made things worse, instilling a terror in her heart and horror in her mind that made it impossible to find any peace. She's little more than a ghost in Taika, especially after she became changed - as if she hadn't lost enough. Now she had even lost herself.

But then one day, after years apart, Monroe arrived in Taika - suffering a curse that meant they could not remain in the west. Once more Enid feels a spark reignite in her spirit, weak, but determined: if it will make them happy, then she will help Roe be rid of their affliction.
