His quirk gives him physical properties similar to a phantom, being able to possess items, fly/hover, and phase through things. They don't have a need for food, but must sleep to mentally "recharge" and continue to use their quirk at full potential. However, they need to be mentally active to keep from phasing through the ground they stand on, and given his state of constant sleepiness, he has the tendency to wake up in the ground at random intervals.
