History

The Leroux family were powerful - led by matriarch Aster Leroux, the family was the biggest supplier of firearms for the Enoxian Defence Force. Aster made her own fortune after recovering from the war - a fresh engineering graduate at the time, her first gun was made as a necessity of self-defence. Her resourcefulness and obstinate perfectionism produced a product that people took notice of, and not before long she had made her first big sale to the newly formed defence force. The force relied on her, and she on them, for they enabled her to start producing firearms on a large scale. When Geralt, a young businessman approached her budding company with promises of prosperity, the two formed an alliance. Together, they defined the Leroux name. Aster and Geralt married, though he was much different from her: she was the enterprise, and he was the manipulative smile. Soon they bore four sons, each a planned heir to the Leroux business.

While Aster worked tirelessly on the business, Geralt indulged in their newfound wealth. He was, after all, half of the Leroux name, and felt entitled to their luxury. On an especially overcast day, a woman whose face Geralt hardly recognised knocked on their door with a child - his child. She wanted either a portion of their fortune, or for Geralt to take their child. He of course paid her off, but she was opportunistic. With each passing year she revisited the family and continued to ask for more money. In the third year, Aster caught on. She was furious at his infidelity, and could not bear the thought of how the family’s image would be tarnished if anyone were to find out about Geralt’s illegitimate child. She took everything, and left.

No longer able to pay the woman, Geralt was left with the child. In pitiful reminiscence, he renamed her Constance - what Aster would have named their daughter had they not had four sons, and Constance became everything Geralt’s past was to him.

Seven years had passed since Geralt and Aster split. It was on another overcast day when a fateful knock sounded on Geralt’s door, but this face was one he had not seen for seven years. Augustine, Geralt and Aster’s eldest son, had turned eighteen and left home. They both knew that Augustine would be Aster’s heir, for they shared the same wit, intelligence, and admittedly, pathological need for control. After being forbidden to contact his father after the divorce, Augustine reconnected with Geralt for closure, for he knew that his father was unfaithful, but also knew that image was important enough to his mother that she would not have divorced him for that alone.

Even after seven years, Augustine realised that his father had not changed. He was unable to come to terms with the divorce, and still lived by his old habits that were enabled by the family’s money. Geralt did not work - he was paid an allowance by the Leroux business in exchange for showing his face every once in a while so as to maintain the illusion that him and Aster were still together. These paychecks, however, were never spent productively, and Constance was often left unattended.

Augustine and Constance formed a bond. While Augustine felt like he was nothing but a safety net for his parents’ company, Constance knew she was unwanted by her mother and a token of the past for her father. When Constance asked if it would ever get better - if they could ever leave, there was no way Augustine was able to say no. He packed his bags again and set his sights on the unlit streets of Regio - where his mother wouldn’t be able to find him, and where no one would recognise his Leroux name. He waited for a night where the moon shone white and Geralt was absent, took Constance’s hand and left, but not before pilfering whatever cash his father would carelessly leave about the house. When confronted with his father’s withered loafers at the door, perhaps Augustine did feel a pang of guilt in his heart, but he was always good at compartmentalisation.
