PERSONALITY

Growing up alone has left Abyss more detached from the rest of the planetside clutch than the others. He doesn't talk much, as he didn't have a reason to speak for much of his early life; he's more used to listening and observing than he is to talking and participating. He comes off intimidating and unapproachable, often seated separate from the group and on a perch with a good view of the surrounding area. His expression rarely strays from neutral or outright aggressive. Even while he promised himself he would stay emotionally distant from his siblings and act only as their bodyguard, Abyss finds himself more and more fond of the others every day - though he does his best not to show this.

Since Abyss isn't great at communicating with others, he'll often expect that everyone around him knows things that seem obvious to him. He's patient when it comes to waiting out a threat or prey, but has little tolerance for trying to explain things to his siblings. Some of this stems from a lack of patience with himself for being too unclear with his words to teach well.

Abyss does wish that he could fit in better, but spending time socializing would mean letting his guard down, and he would never forgive himself if something happened to his only family, particularly on his watch. He has, however, begun to learn that perhaps protecting his siblings can be twofold - they could use emotionally support as much as they need protection from physical harm. Maybe he'll try to learn that, too, for their sake..

BACKGROUND

Early Life

When the planetside clutch's escape pod crash landed on the planet, Abyss's egg didn't arrive with the others. He was flung free of the ship in the crash, and hatched some distance away from the rest of his fellow aktego, alone. He's lucky to be alive, surviving on his own for so long in a harsh and foreign environment. His life alone has hardened him, left him always on alert and wary of others. Even having never met another of his species, he could always feel that something was missing in his life. Abyss never stopped wandering and searching for that missing piece.

Abyss named himself after the darkness of the sky after dusk, wanting to remind himself that he's strong with a name that embues fear. On his planet, night is often when the most dangerous life is active.

Finding Home

When Abyss finally wandered into the territory of the other planetside hatchlings and their foster parent, he knew he'd found what he'd been searching for - but he couldn't help but feel out of place anyway. These five were a family with a shared history and life, and he was an outsider who knew nothing in life but survival.

Abyss kept himself emotionally distant from the others even as they welcomed him into the group, and he dedicated himself to protecting them, with the decision that this was the only thing he really knew how to do right. Now, he acts as the group's self-proclaimed bodyguard, always ensuring no one goes out alone, he's by their side outside their home shelter, and they're watched over at night.

RELATIONSHIPS

EVE Sibling

28059548?1719896240

Abyss is especially protective of Eve because he's the smallest, and Eve looks up to Abyss the most because he's the strongest. Oddly, of all his siblings, Abyss feels the safest in Eve's presence. Abyss can protect himself from physical harm without problem, but Eve makes him feel like he's protected emotionally as well. He knows that his little brother genuinely cares about everyone, no matter what, and won't judge him for being slow or saying something embarrassing. Abyss would do anything for his siblings, but he'd especially do anything for Eve.

SILT Sibling

33542044?1749499050

Abyss isn't quite sure how to feel about Silt. On the one hand, she has the easiest time understanding his sparse words and so is easier to talk with. On the other, he can't help but feel that she doesn't quite care for him. She'll bring him along on trips to gather resources or study new things so he can carry samples for her, but she seems to have little regard for his well-being. It's not that she'd let him get hurt, just that he seems to be more of a tool than a sibling most of the time.

He also runs into a similar communication problem with Silt that others have with him: she'll talk way over his head about her discoveries and he'll have difficulty understanding her, though it's because she talks too much without explanation rather than too little. Silt has a habit of not taking Abyss's warnings seriously enough, too, often seeming to believe that she knows more than he does even in areas where his expertise absolutely exceeds hers.

TBN Father

32304221?1743020079

Abyss has never met his biological father, and doesn't think much of this missing link in his life. To him, he's not really missing anything at all, since he's never had parents to miss in the first place. He can't imagine his family growing past his littermates and their [species] foster mother, and would be offput and confused if/when he ever meets his father.

Trivia

  • Abyss is slightly larger than the average aktego, with better strength and stamina as well. He's taller than his siblings, and can carry them with ease.
  • Abyss is best described as survival-smart. He may not be the best with social cues, science details, or artistic vision, but if he tells you to duck, you duck.
  • Aktego are not naturally a physically combative species, and generally lack traits useful in a fight. Despite these limits, Abyss has taught himself to handle confrontation by moving quickly and exploiting his enemies' weak spots. You don't need claws for poking someone in the eyes to hurt. Eventually, he'll learn to craft and use weapons alongside his siblings.
