dr. chris ash worked on her project with her and had his reservations and when they ran out of funding he left finally overwhelmed by the guilt. When she was edith newman she did care for ash (as much as she was capable) and called him her closest friend, enjoying their long talks about all types of science. She was genuinely unwilling to hurt him or let him get hurt. Ed3n on the other hand, has no such limitations.
