Marquis Kylian de Churneau is an Orlesian human Chevalier and an agent of the Inquisition.

Kylian can be recruited after the Inquisitor’s visit to Val Royeaux. The Marquis of Churneau extends an invitation through Leliana’s spy network, allowing the Inquisitor to visit the town of Churneau, in northern Orlais, bordering Nevarra.

After meeting the Inquisitor, Kylian is taken with their ideals, and promises to grant assistance to the Inquisition by way of resources, manpower, or political sway.

History

Kylian Montbeliard is the twenty-seventh Marquis of Churneau, rightfully assuming his position after the graceful retirement of his mother.

Churneau is desolate land, bordering the dreary Nahashin Marshes and the unrighteous Nevarran territory of Perendale. It is the end of the western branch of the Imperial Highway, with only the ruins of Andoral’s Reach beyond it. Despite this, the town is populated, relying on the exports of ore and wool, and the sheer stubbornness of people to make this place work.

Grand Game:
To play The Grand Game is Kylian’s duty, and one he accepts with relish. The Grand Game not only brings status and wealth to the noble, but places their territory on a higher distinction. It is an internal war that is necessary to bring forth unity and progress. It is something he’s learnt to love.

Kylian, however, makes too compassionate a Player. He is honour-bound to the Chevalier’s code, but lacks the ruthlessness other Chevalier Nobles have to make up for this handicap. The Dowager Lady Mantillon has expressed her disapproval of Marquis Kylian. He still tries his best for his people, but that move has cost him his local popularity. His people are opined that their Marquis is a try-hard, and that he should accept and work with what he has, rather than reaching for an ideal world.

Chevalier:
He is a Chevalier because he believes in their code of honour — that of justice and righteousness. He is firm in his belief but compassionately so, and is understanding of the philosophies of other people. This is even despite the harsh, almost violent training Orlesian chevaliers undergo, producing countless members who become outright evil and prejudiced. Kylian does not consider cruel Chevalier as his equal, standing proud on his achievements, but will treat them with honour nonetheless.

Mage-Templar War:
Kylian despises the Mage-Templar war and its repercussions, considering it a waste of resources that does not benefit from conflict.

In 9:40 Dragon, as many mages fled to Andoral’s Reach for the Conclave of the College of Enchanters, Marquis Kylian ordered his town to look the other way as mages passed through Churneau.

Inquisition:
While being supportive of the cause and the leader from the very beginning, Kylian is immediately smitten with the Inquisition upon his first visit to Haven / Skyhold. The Inquisition stronghold seems to have such a lively and communal air around it that Kylian dreams for his territory to eventually have. Kylian has responsibilities on his own seat, but occasionally accompanies the delivery escorts to the Inquisition in order to learn how to create such a warm atmosphere for his land.

Kylian can assist the Inquisitor with many and most quests set in Orlais, as he has the home field advantage. Not only is he intimately aware with the noble Players of the Game, but his Chevalier training has brought him to explore the more uninhabitable regions of Orlais, and he can share this experience.

Kylian can personally accompany the Inquisitor during the Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts questline.

Headcanons:

• He will remove his mask when his stature does not demand he wear it.
• Kylian speaks with a standard King’s accent, but will affect an Orlesian accent while in court, as he was raised to act with courtesy.
  
• He is fluent in King’s Tongue, Orlesian, and Tevene.  
• Kylian is not a pious man, but he does believe in the Maker and the Chantry, and can recite prayers.
  
• Kylian is prejudiced against Nevarrans as his territory is close to Perendale, which he believes is rightfully Orlesian (it is a touchy subject for more Northern Orlesians)
• He is a big fan of Varric Tethras’ books.
  
• Varric gives him the nickname “Feathers” and Kylian is absolutely tickled with it.
• Kylian has a war horse name Brangaine. She is the only animal Kylian is comfortable around, if only due to proximity.
  

Relationships:

• Comtesse Solange Montbeliard (canon) is Kylian’s first cousin and a member of the Council of Heralds. She is in contact with Leliana.
• Kylian highly respects Grand Duke Gaspard de Chalons and treats him like his idol.
