BACKGROUND

Brought up in a small family in Denmark, Vaan was born with a physical problem with his vocal cords, in turn leaving him mute. Despite being unable to talk, Vaan leant basic sign to converse with his parents and still enjoyed the simple and exciting lifestyle that other children did. Turning to books to keep him company, at a later age Vaan held a fascination with theatre scripts such as Shakespeare and Aristotle, dreaming of one day performing on stage or being a playwright himself. As it was too expensive and a luxury for his family to attend a performance, Vaan insisted on doing odd jobs after and before school to earn pocket money, and save to afford tickets for his family. Several months passed and fliers of a ventriloquist performing in a small auditorium of their town caught Vaans attention.

The ventriloquist and his doll named 'Hugo' were an interesting pair; they were very comedic and Hugo was made to be snarky, juvenile and sarcastic towards his owner. At a point during the show, Vaan was unexpectedly chosen from the crowd to go onto the stage, and when asked to state his name, Vaan became nervous until Hugo spoke for him. Vaan was stunned, the doll was able to read his thoughts, and converse with him without signing.

The evening the ventriloquist was to leave for the next town, and an uninvited Hugo was waiting on Vaans bed when he returned from school. At first startled and scrambling for the door, the boy soon calmed down and conversed with the doll through thought, and Hugo speaking out loud. Learning they had very similar ambitions, Vaan wishing to be able to commune with others, Hugo longing to live a regular human life, they came to an agreement that together they could help fulfil each other's aspirations as Hugo could be Vaan's voice.

After a few years into Vaans late teens, he hit a stump in his road leading to studying literature and history in university due to his disability, suffering harsh discrimination and the inability to pay for the scholar funds. He also found it difficult to land a job befitting him as most required oral communication, but was to his delight hired as the opening act for a production preforming in the larger amphitheatre. The crowd was impressed and uneasy with Vaan and Hugo's performance, as he was known to be mute, it was impossible for him to talk for the doll. As it was only a temporary job, the duo still gained a reputation and experience from their recital, helping the two when apply for a traveling circus, Circ de Freak as they toured Europe in hopes to becoming a member and a step closer to his dreams of performance.
