Mordecai was originally a human who was working with a group to create a cure for shades and he ended up testing an incomplete version of it on himself after the rest of the group was killed and he was attacked. He still turned and lost his memory, but his mind remained human. Eventually deciding to go by Mordecai, he tried to blend into a small town. For awhile it worked pretty well, but then people started disappearing and others grew suspicious of him since no one really knew anything about him. Someone learned that he was a shade and he was soon was discovered by shadehunters, who captured and tortured him. He eventually escaped and went to live in the ruins of a city where he didn't think he would be found again (though he can't remember, it was the city he lived in for awhile as a human) He's pretty quiet, usually avoiding people since he doubts that anyone will see past the fact that he's a shade, and often wonders why he's different from other shades. He tries to help othes from a distance, doing what he can to keep other shades away from nearby towns. By the time he finally meets Arlo (and her group soon after) it's been a long time since he's actually talked with anyone.

Meeting Arlo

Not sure yet if she was traveling with the group or if they were separated but at some point arlo ended up near the ruins mordecai had been living in. She could sense energy from shades in the area but never ran into any (or if she did they were already dead). At some point though she saw Mordecai kill a shade and tried to talk to him but he was afraid to talk to talk wiith her because of his experience with the shadehunters and tried to run away. Arlo was able to track him through the city and found him. He didn’t really want to talk but thought that maybe if he did for a bit and answered her questions (or made it obvious that he wouldn’t answer) that she'd go away, so he tried talking with her from a distance…. Which sort of worked except that when she finally *did* start to leave he realized he didn’t want her to and accidentally asked if she’d come back again before he realized what he was saying. She did the next day/night, and the next and so on. They slowly started to gain each other’s trust but Mordecai never took off his hood/mask since he was afraid of how she’d react. When it was time for her to rejoin/leave with the group she tried to convince him to go with her and he told her he thought it wouldn’t work and after he tried to avoid some more questions from Arlo he finally showed her and tried to explain. I’m undecided atm whether she already knew 100% that he was a shade but she did at least have some idea and wasn’t surprised, which really confused him because that was the last thing he would have expected. • Mordecai doesn't keep track of time very well and isn't sure of his exact age but he's somewhere aroud a thousand years old
• Over the centuries Mordecai has grown fond of painting and uses the ruins of the city as a canvas, often depicting historical events or reminders of the city as it used to be in an attempt to keep its memory alive long after its occupents abandonded it
• Mordecai has a house. Sort of. He stays in the old palace he renovated. Like parts of the city, many walls throughout it now feature elaborate paintings, including an ornate ballroom with full sized paintings on the walls making it seem at first glance as if a party is still continuing centuries after it was left empty, a large libray and his own room.
