Absethe's past has made her both desperate for love yet very untrusting of others. She mostly keeps to herself and her small set of friends, and rarely makes new ones. Distant as she may seem however, once she finally befriends someone, she becomes fiercely protective of them. If her friends need her help, she's more than willing to set aside some time for them - so long as helping wouldn't completely ruin her plans, that is. Although she is determined to accomplish her goals, the disapproval of her loved ones sometimes lowers her confidence.

Skills

Shapeshifting

Strength:
Absethe's #1 strength and go-to spell is shapeshifting. She can turn into any animal she's had prolonged contact with - so think birds, cats, and so on.

Soul extraction

Strength:
Although she only looked into the soul extraction spell to help revive Hector, having done it seven times has made her pretty good at it.

Soothing spell

Strength:
When Hector was dying and when she was treating Korbin's injuries, she used these spells to keep them calm. Try as she may though, she can never quite get them to work on herself.

Necromancy

Strength:
Absethe has only recently discovered the existence of this magic, and she only plans to use it to revive Hector once she's gathered all the souls. It will likely be successful due to her prowess of magic in general, but one can never be sure.

Background

Absethe was once a human witch known as Sethe. She grew up in a small town, completely unaware of her magical prowess. What she was aware of however was how the townsfolk would whisper about her behind her back, concerned by her eccentric behavior and trying to speculate a reason for it. One day she was cornered by a rowdy group of kids and finally snapped, knocking all of them back with a magical blast that seemed to come out of nowhere. Upon seeing Sethe's magic, the town drove her away.

Sethe traveled aimlessly through a nearby forest, not knowing what her fate would be and fearing her recently discovered powers. But Sethe's misfortune left her unmotivated to care for herself and she eventually collapsed beside a stream. She awoke to find a bunch of animals crowded around her. They tended to her and she quickly discovered that she had the ability to speak to animals. Once she was better, she told all of them about how she was treated back in her hometown. A brownish cat stepped forward, introduced himself as Hector, and immediately offered her a place to live - an abandonned cabin he had found in the mountains.

Hector and Sethe spent years together, both homing Sethe's powers and comforting each other. Sethe felt she had made her first real friend, and she was determined to keep him safe and happy. Sethe decided to change her name to Absethe, an attempt to distance herself from her origins.

Story

After many years together, Hector suddenly passed away. Absethe was absolutely devastated by this - her one and only friend, just gone out of nowhere? She was confused, angry, and above all else determined to have her friend back. She poured herself into her research, desperately searching for a way to bring him back.

One day, Absethe noticed an injured bird lying in the window of her home. She took him in and tended to his injuries, and realized that this bird was actually a familiar spirit. He introduced himself as Korbin and offered to help her in any way he could in exchange for saving his life. Absethe appreciated his support and allowed him to stay in her home, but as soon as he was no longer fully reliant on her care, she returned to her research...

... And it paid off. Absethe discovered a spell that could bring a fallen creature back to life, at the cost of nine souls.

Hector

[ best friend ]

Before his death, Hector was Absethe's best friend and trusted companion. Although he would have seemed too gruff or mean-spirited to others, Absethe felt his utter honesty and teasing nature kept her grounded. Without his input to guide her, she has become much more reckless.

Korbin

[ familiar ]

Prior to setting off on her quest to revive Hector's spirit, Absethe found Korbin injured underneath a tree. While treating the bird's injuries, she came to realize that he was a familiar spirit. The two quickly grew close - but although Korbin has reinvigorated Absethe, she still feels that no one could ever replace Hector.

Cathy

[ friend ]

Cathy is the first outsider who has looked at Absethe without disgust in a long time. Worried and repulsed by the way Cathy's owner treats his pet, Absethe feels a strong need to protect her - even if it means that her secrets may be found out.
