got his place as captain after beating up the previous captain of the ship in a barfight and making the crew part of the bet. this backfired very badly later and he ended up drowning at the bottom of the ocean, becoming a ghost loaded with a prophecy. and then he fell in love with the girl he was supposed to deliver the prophecy to, so he's avoiding that now
