Profile
A villain who recently made his debut by killing a police officer in broad daylight, he fell hard and fast for Rory, but tries to keep that fact to himself, trying to avoid a relationship, especially with someone of her personality and type. Even outside of his villainous identity, though, he finds himself getting closer and closer with her, his perception altering and even rescuing her on numerous occasions. He is extremely keen to know more about her, and is sensitive to her situation even if he doesn't quite understand it.

- Books and poetry
- Having control
- Orange-flavored things
- Currently interning under Eli in journalism. He helps Eli around the station with paperwork, which he hates, and occasionally on the field, which he loves.
- Loves collecting things, one could say he has a collection of collections.
- He used to hate the color pink, until recently.
- Had a comfortable upbringing, but due to authortarian parents, he became obsessed with having control over things (and even people) until Rory starts to help him in his journey to heal.
His hatred of heroes stems from a culmination of several sources. His parents did nothing to help, serving as the earliest spark of his villainous activity by their authoritarian actions- Nothing Matthew could do would ever be good enough for them, and any impossible tasks given that he managed to succeed in- even excel in- were met with very little to nonexistent praise. Planting the seed for his future, any mistake he made was met with severe reprimandation, and insults flung at him and how he was, even as a kid. Partners were usually similar, as were his social circles. He could never escape being 'wrong' and 'stupid', or people doing things for him against his will because they deemed him not bright enough to accomplish a task, no matter how well he may had completed one just shortly prior..
He saw the same in the heroes flaunted on the news- it was always how incredible they were, what amazing feats they had accomplished and how the odds were stacked against them yet they managed to save even just one person. They could do no wrong, and they knew it. His parents taking him to meet 'good role models' and interacting with heroes did nothing to help- now someone somehow even more powerful than his own parents was telling him to behave, to do great things- as if he hadn't already. These heroes were strangers, just humoring his parents, but those interactions lead to an eventual breaking point in Matthew- one where he wanted to finally feel some semblance of control in his life. Who were they to tell him he wasn't good enough? If they were the marker, then the goal was nearly impossible- dependent on popularity and the powers they were born with, which was the basis modern heroing followed. You were rich and successful if people liked you, and as Matthew saw it, no one truly liked him. Not in a way they had made known to him, anyway.
Matthew's power revolves around Control- specifically, Emotional Manipulation. At it's core, all he's capable of doing is twisting your emotions- making you feel happy when you should feel sad, or make you feel motivated to do something you were dragging your feet in doing. The danger comes when he uses it more aggressively... Like making you feel an intense need to run into oncoming traffic, making you feel borderline euphoria levels of happiness in the act of stabbing the person next to you, and insidiously severe bouts of depression that could be life-threatening.
Rory [ Love Interest ]
Inadvertently, he had saved Rory when they had first met- the police officer he had caused to walk into traffic had been harassing Rory at the time. Though he fell for her the moment he saw her, he avoided any possible relationship for as long as he could. Though circumstance never really worked in his favor... from running into her in his casual clothes at a book store, to rescuing her from a dangerous situation with her ex, Matthew can't seem to avoid Rory, no matter how hard (or weakly) he tries.
Eli [ Pseudo-boss/Friend ]
Where Matthew is full of confidence is his work, Eli is the opposite. Despite being Matthew's boss essentially, Eli barely knows what to do with him given his complete lack of feelings of superiority and confidence in his work. Despite this, they work together surprisingly well, and eventually Eli's overly humble personality begins to rub off on Matthew- and Matthew's somewhat overconfidence begins to rub off on Eli too.
Kinan [ Frenemy ]
Despite Kinan's bristled demeanor towards Matthew, Matthew himself doesn't actually mind them. He didn't quite understand why they hated him at first, but now knowing it's due to their protectiveness of Rory and Matthew's... particular choice of profession, he understands and doesn't hold it against them. Though when push comes to shove, they have each others back- so Rory won't ever be sad, and because they've started to grow on each other. (Or, more accurately, Matthew's grown on Kinan.)
