Vampires are a species closely resembling humans, come to be known as undead due to their long-lived and inhuman nature.
Vampires don't have blood of their own, which is why they must drink it in order to preserve their bodies. Attacking livestock and even the people around them, their mere existance would claim many lives in their community, which led to vampires being hunted and driven out. During these times, numerous vampires migrated north in search for safety. As their environment changed, so, too, would their habits. Over time, these vampires of the north became distinct from their more common counterparts, at least in the eyes of the people.
Frost vampires, acclimated to the cold climate, are able to preserve their bodies without drinking blood of still–living creatures, as long as they partake in a meat-heavy diet. Due to fear of being discovered, vampires who'd migrated north had survived solely on the local wildlife and occasional livestock, and thus it became common for frost vampires to have never laid their fangs on a single human.
While there may still be frost vampires out there who live out their lives in the wilderness in such a way, the [lastname] family differs. They trade with a nearby town, openly participating in their economy as respected members of the community.
TL;DR
Vampires usually drink blood. However, frost vampires don't need to, with cold climate and a meat-heavy diet.
The maximum lifespan for vampires is unknown. Although they're unaffected by common ailments caused by aging, their physical condition is otherwise similar to that of humans. The most common cause of death in vampires are various types of injuries, whether acquired in an accident, or intentionally inflicted by persecutors. Paired with other causes, such as natural disasters, starvation, and vampires' innate weaknesses, even just a few hundred years is a very long time to survive in a hostile environment. It's speculated that it may still be rather young in terms of possible lifespan, but no one can say for certain.
While the [lastname] family is in a better position to avoid coming in harm's way, this hasn't served to considerably affect the known lifespan of vampires. The residents of the manor must not partake in anything that could be seen as deliberately trying to extend their life, as the inhuman lifespan of vampires is considered heretical, and must be in no way pursued. The locals have deemed that as long as the Manor's inhabitants abide by this, their long-lived nature can be considered unfortunate happenstance they have no control over, and shall not be persecuted for it. Because of this, the residents of the mansion live out their lives like humans to the best of their ability, making sure to also show their face in town every once in a while. Still, the [lastname] can be considered to be some of the longest lived vampires, as they consistently reach into the higher end of known vampire ages.
TL;DR
Vampires might not pass on from old age, but are still susceptible to other causes of death that humans are, which limits their lifespan.
One weakness innate to all vampirekind is sunlight, more specifically direct sunrays. In very cloudy weather, a vampire could go outside during the day, but it would be extremely dangerous, even with their whole body covered. If the clouds were to part, and their skin were enveloped by the sun, it would burn so severely it's akin to catching on fire. If they were unable to get to shade, it could quickly end up fatal.
To avoid the dangers posed by the sun, the common vampire is nocturnal, unlike many of the frost vampires residing far north. With very few daylight hours in the dead of winter, frost vampires are able to be active for a majority of what's normally considered daytime, if they so choose. This is especially beneficial for the [lastname] family, as they're able to conduct business on a similar schedule to the human locals. The family and their [hotel name] Manor are well known around the area, and travelers passing through are encouraged to stay at their abode.
However, when faced with the nightless nights of the northern summer, even sleeping through the day wouldn't be enough. Therefore frost vampires hibernate from spring, and as such, [hotel name] Manor also closes its doors each year. This is also the only time when all of its residents rest in coffins, as each of their private quarters is fitted with a more traditional bed that they may use instead if they prefer.
TL;DR
Direct sunlight severely burns vampires' skin, and can be fatal. Frost vampires aren't fully nocturnal, but must hibernate through summer.
The [lastname] all wear cross jewelry directly on their skin. This serves as both a sign of their goodwill, as well as insurance for the townsfolk. Traditionally, a cross is known to burn a vampire's skin, and the same would hold true for a frost vampire as well, if they had ever drank the blood of man.
On the contrary, silver innately burns the skin of all vampirekind, likely relating to its ties to the sun in mythology. Burns inflicted in this manner are extremely painful, and tend to linger a long while, as they don't heal without drinking blood from a still–living creature. (not entirely decided on the healing part im undecided on their healing abilities in general... if it works like that though then it applies to sunlight as well) Therefore the family's jewelry, as well as all tableware in the hotel, is brushed in gold instead.
TL;DR
Silver burns the skin of vampires. Crosses usually as well, but frost vampires are immune to crosses, so long as they don't drink human blood.
