John used to be a cop working at the biggest police department of Republic. He had a passion for his job, which made him one of the best cops ever to work at this department. John had wife, a kid and a good job. However, nothing good lasts too long. At some point of his life he got onto a case involving a serial killer - the once case he got obsessed with. Jonh's wife left him, he never saw his kid anymore after that, but he continued working on the case, growing some kind of personal hatred to the killer. Eventually, he meets a guy he falls in love with. A criminal, a genius of his "profession" - his name was Daryl. John tried to help him change over and over again, failing every time. Daryl starts killing people, John fails at detaining him and accidentally kills him in process. Full of hatred and heartbroken, he retires as a policeman and starts working as archivist.
He was never able to love anyone anymore. Yet, with time, medication, therapy and rest, he manages to make few friends, including Rem and a guy, who he later feels certain warm feelings to, though never resulting in any official relationship between two.

He's a tired old man. He used to have a good aim, but since he retired he never ever picked up gun again. Despite being nervous and anxious, he's still pretty cold headed, which doesn't really help him with maintaining friednships, to his misfortune.
He used to drink a lot. A lot. He stopped when he started therapy.
Daryl's ghost still haunts him in his dreams. Sometimes, with his face looking like serial killer's one from that one case John was obsessed with.

- He hates working at police, and he hates paperwork, but he likes smell of paper and books.
- He doesn't change his job because he's very good at it and he's sure he wouln't be able to find anything better for him other than working at police archive.

Despite Daryl being an criminal, John really loved him. Unfortunately, this love wasn't purely mutual. At this time John wasn't much of a wise man, yet he wanted their relationship to prosper and be legal. John's attempts to help Daryl change were not successful, resulting in John killing Daryl at some point.
