Niazai's parents were born in Kandahar, Afghanistan and when the Soviets invaded the country, they fled to Pakistan. Fearing that the war was going to migrate further, they sought asylum in the US. Niazai's mother was pregnant with her at the time and gave birth to her months after they settled in San Francisco. Her parents encouraged her to be ambitious and so she excelled in both academics and athletics. Instead of pursuing a gymnastics career, she attended UC Berkeley and graduated with a bachelors in both electrical engineering and journalism.
After traveling around the world and writing about various cultures, she took it upon herself to go back to her parent's homeland to report on the current state of affairs. There she met Specialist Erik "Maverick" Thorn in Kabul and developed a close relationship with him that could have led to her being kidnapped to lure Thorn into investigating her disappearance. After two years of silence, she re-emerged with Thorn and helped solidify his intel to dismantle a major insurgency operation. Though they were still questioning her involvement, she was exonerated and her testimony sealed.
Instead of returning to civilian life, she was recruited into the Central Intelligence Agency for her expertise in gathering info and being able to blend in with the people and culture in various countries. Something that she was known for in her journalism days, but the skill was honed during her disappearance with Thorn. Following his footsteps, she became an exceptional intelligence officer for the CIA to rival even his standards. Since then, she's been involved in numerous operations to counter terrorism both national and internationally. Niazai was one of the first to notice White Mask activity in Cambridge, Massachusetts, their first act of terrorism at Bartlett University. Her continued involvement with gathering as much intel as possible about the White Mask is why she was recommended to Rainbow. |

Niazai is the eldest and first generation American in her family coming from diaspora. Her parents encouraged her to be ambitious and she took that to heart. Though, knowing her family's history of fleeing a war and taking care of her younger brother that needed special attention, she admits that she had felt pressured into becoming a "perfect daughter and older sister" until she entered university and pursued journalism. She says that she wanted to explore the world and see what it had to offer, and she still does.
I've watched some of Niazai's videos when she was still a reporter to compare and contrast how she is now after what had happened in Afghanistan. The incident didn't leave her without any scars. She's good at compartmentalizing and coping with what had happened, which I'm sure surprises everyone considering she was only just a civilian at the time. The debriefs of her disappearance explain in good detail what had been done to her and what she had done herself - what would break most people, even seasoned veterans, has made her stronger than before. I believe that it was due to Specialist Thorn's guidance that she was able to keep herself afloat even to this day. Their time together explains her connection to him that is beyond being her mentor and friend.
She knew that she couldn't return to her old life and so she did not hesitate when the CIA offered her a position within her ranks despite Thorn telling her to keep out of trouble when they had split ways after they were exonerated. With her experience in exploring and blending in various cultures and being taught by Thorn, the CIA had seen her potential just like I have from watching her videos. She has an ability to get you to trust her and lull you into a false sense of security, which is where she gets her callsign - Venus, a nod towards the venus fly trap. She's managed to adapt her experience from being a reporter to being an intelligence officer for the CIA.

 | The "Nazar," named after the amulet believed to protect against the evil eye, was first made in Afghanistan when Niazai and Thorn were hiding out in one of his safe houses. To secure their defenses, Niazai re-purposed her cameras for surveillance and distraction. Her cameras produce audio to lure enemies to investigate where the camera will then flash the enemy in rapid succession.
