THE RITUAL

"A suitable vessel, white lotus petals, and a cup of fresh blood are all that you need to acquire in order to gain a loyal, lifelong servant. And plenty of luck, of course.

Under a new moon, take your servant's future vessel (be it a doll, a stuffed animal or anything else small and with articulated limbs) and cover its face with the petals. Wait until you hear windchimes in the distance, then recite the spell listed on page 33 verbatim. Make sure your pronunciation is correct.

Carefully pour the blood onto the vessel, avoiding the lotus petals, until the cup drains completely. It will feel as though you're pouring much more than should be possible given the cup's size. By the end the vessel should be stained completely red save for its face, and all sound around you will cease. Place one of the petals in your mouth and close your eyes.
Do not open them no matter what you hear.

You'll know if the ritual has worked when morning comes."

---

Blood to attract the spirit and the holy petals to placate it, eating one to seal the bond between you and it forever. It sounds straightforward enough, but as mentioned previously luck plays a large factor as well. There's no guarantee that you'll get a good spirit. A risk vs. reward kind of ritual.

In the morning the man who performed that ritual woke to see the fragile ball-jointed doll he'd used had taken the appearance of a flaxen-haired maiden, modeling itself after the spirit which inhabited it. Nothing would make him think that inside was the soul of a cruel vampiress who was burned at the stake years ago... until the lotus petals wore off, that is.

Until then, life was simple. She would cook, clean, and act as his companion, just as the ritual had said she would. But as months went on her old self slowly returned. First livestock began to go missing. Then any drifters that came to the village would disappear overnight. But who would suspect a doll, of all things? Who would think that the spirit inside was just as cold and unfeeling as its porcelain exterior?

Eventually young men from the village began to go missing, and people had been taking notice. Rumor spread of the man's involvement in dark arts and the villagers, whose judgement had been clouded by a desperate panic, accused the man of being behind it all.

As the villagers raided his home late in the evening, Sanguine silently watched the carnage unfold, posing once more as an innocent doll. Had any of them cared to inspect her, they would've noted she had an almost mocking glint in her dead glass eyes.
