Saint used to have a normal name and work a fairly mundane job as the owner of a small merchant vessel to transport produce between nearby islands with some hired help. Some time in his mid-forties, he was complaining as usual and wishing for a better way to deal with the rats on his boat. This time, though, one of the fey overheard him, and decided to make a deal. After a lot of careful negotiation to avoid giving up any important memories or something innocuous that would probably turn out to be important later, he traded his boat for a way to deal with rats.
Well, "a way to deal with rats" turned out to be "speaking with them", and "rats" turned out to not just be living rats. He burns offerings of a handful of grain every night to win over the local ghost rats, who don't get a lot of offerings, and has entire swarms waiting at his beck and call just beyond the mortal veil. (His fight scenes get… unpleasant.) On the other hand, trading "his boat" included any boat that became his, as he found out when he used his money from pest control to buy a new boat.
After unwittingly getting involved with the fey, Saint is a lot more careful about how he speaks now. He goes by "Saint of Rats" or "Saint" to avoid giving out his true name, and is working on moving to where nobody knows it.
