As a grim reaper, it is their job to separate a person’s soul from their body at the time of death. This is considered a painful process, as it often has to be started the moment before the victim actually dies, to reduce the risk of their soul being corrupted, or stolen by paranormal creatures known as Liths. To lessen the pain, most grim reapers will inject the victim with a supernatural anesthetic that numbs both their physical body and their soul.

Grim reapers are also capable of shapeshifting, though this comes with limits. They are unable to shift/regenerate any part of their bodies that have been cut off-- this includes additional limbs or parts that they weren't necessarily born with, or any injuries retained from their time of death. For example, if they were to shift a pair of wings, and then have one cut off in a fight or accident, they would not be able to restore that wing next time they tried to grow them.
