[nextcol]Melektaus was born an only child. His parents loved him as much as any parents would. They gave him many things; expensive silken clothing, feasts of insects and plants, but most of all, they fed him conceited views.

"You are the best." They'd say.

"No one is better than you." They'd say.

"If anyone thinks they are better, shove them down." They'd say.

Of course, as a child, Melektaus simply absorbed these teachings. He had no moral compass, since his parents' ones were so distorted. He didn't see them put their words into action, so he simply thought to himself, I'm the best! No one else is better than me! Yay!

But one day, a Coatl with headache-causing colors accidentally bumped into his father, causing him to tumble to the earth. Red-hot with shame and fury, Melektaus's father rose from the ground, cursing a streak that would even make a sailor blush.

The dragon flinched under each harshly spoken insult. The shouts at him being useless, ugly, worthless to the clan drove deep into his slender frame. To little Melektaus, this was terrifying. He had never seen his father act in such a way before. When the screaming finally ended, the dragon was curled up in a ball on the ground, fear in his gaze and tears in his eyes.

As they padded away from the poor Coatl, Melektaus's father said briskly, "And that, my son, is how you deal with commonfolk who have too much confidence; you knock them down." He said it   nonchalantly, as if describing the weather.

From that moment on, Melektaus never listened to his father. If this is what it meant to be beautiful, to knock down and insult, he didn't want to be beautiful. He didn't want to be one of those dragons like his father. He wanted to be good and pure. Not beautiful.

As soon as he didn't lap up every false word his parents told him, they started to turn on him. They started to call him useless, ugly, and worthless to the clan. At first, the original teachings of his parents rebelled against these words, shouting at the top of his soul, "No! I am the best! No one else is!" But gradually, his parents' new words began to worm their way into his mind, eating away at his self-confidence.

It went on and on. Each time they insulted him, he cared a little less about what they had to teach. Each time he cared a little less about what they had to teach, they insulted him. It was a vicious circle. One day, he snapped.

Well, perhaps not snapped. Something inside him certainly broke. But, when one says snapped, everyone instantly thinks that the person in question went into a rage. Not Melektaus.

[/columns]

He was staring into a puddle when he had a sudden realization: I don't have to care. Those insults that they hurled at him like arrows, they didn't have to matter. Instantly, his soul was refreshed. When his parents screamed at him, he'd simply smile graciously and compliment them on their appearances, which drove them into even greater fits.

Just because he no longer allowed their words to affect him didn't mean he enjoyed his time there. As soon as he was old enough to leave his family, he fled to the clan where his mate, which his parents had assigned to him from birth, was staying.

The two leaned on each other, fully aware of the other's suffering. Together, they helped build each other up into something new, something stronger. Together, they became the true Mayura and the true Melektaus.

Melektaus knows that cheerfulness is the best weapon against spite. He is one of those few dragons who will simply grin at their oppressors and say, "Oh gosh, you look beautiful today! I love the way your face gets red when you get mad! Oh yeah! Like that!"

To the weaker and downtrodden of the Fletching clan, Melektaus is a savior clad in his armor of self-confidence. The dragons who are less than nice, however, are infuriated by his easy-going and uncaring behavior. Melektaus has truly found the secret to annoying dragons trying to annoy him.

Although he often uses his compliments as defense against insults, he'll freely give out genuine praise. He knows he's beautiful, and he can tell when another dragon is, too. Whether their beauty shines on the inside or on the outside, Melektaus is an expert at recognizing it.

Melektaus is often called the protector of the weak. He doesn't only stand up for himself, but he stands up for those who can't. Because of this, the lower dragons in the Fletching clan often look up to him for guidance.

His mate is often out on the field, and is rarely by his side. He doesn't mind, though. It only makes their few moments together all the more precious.

If he were to give dragonkind a piece of advice, it would be this: "Don't hate yourself. Be vain! I mean it, be vain! Love yourself with every fiber in your body, for its the only one you have. But don't be so vain as to shove others down. Be vain... but be kind as well."

His Type of Battle...

Melektaus stood protectively in front of the cowering dragon, anger lashing at his heart. Fury clouded his gaze and he fought to keep from leaping at the other dragon's throat. Every cell in his body wanted to rip the smile off the smug dragon standing in front of him.

Instead, he swallowed his rage and gave a dazzling smile. "Oh, so you're Tsoriken!" The Skydancer seemed off-put by his overly cheerful attitude, his superior grin turning down into a frown. "You know, I've heard so much about you! I've heard that you're a very naughty boy!" He offered up another grin.

Tsoriken, the dragon before the rebellion-leader, snorted in disgust. "Insolent child," he growled, his eyes narrowing. A crowd thronged around them, silence clogging their throats.

"Oh...! Did I say something wrong?" He looked around the crowd, his eyes wide in false innocence. The dragon behind him, one that Tsoriken had been insulting moments earlier, managed to crawl away from the brewing fight.

Tsoriken glared at him, rage sparking in his gaze. He seemed to be at a crossroads, as cool blankness and blazing anger fought for expression on his face. Finally, the cool blankness won out. "Come on, Eleison." The dragon next to him followed Tsoriken into the sky, where the crowd watched them until they could no more.

Once they disappeared, uproarious cheers shook the clearing.
