Gideon was a young aristocratic man growing up in the late Victorian era. He had two older brothers who were the focus on inheriting the family business. His parents were always gone for work, and his brothers were always busy studying, which left Gideon to find his own ways to entertain himself as a kid. He took lessons in math and science, learned violin and fencing, but he was mostly raised by the help.

While still young, he met a lower-class boy named Clément. Gideon helped him learn how to read and write, and Clément would take him to a particular apple tree where underneath, they could read, make flower crowns for each other, and discuss their plans for the future. Gideon would sneak Clément around his home during family parties so that they could dance outside. As they grew up together, Gideon realized he had romantic feelings for his male friend. Living in a time where homosexuality was aggressively shunned, he kept it secret from his family. Eventually he told Clément he had feelings for men, and Clément admitted that he was the same. Gideon never confessed his particular interest in him though, because he knew it was one-sided and he didn't want to ruin his one and only close friendship.

An illness had been eating away at Gideon, slowly getting worse over the years. His mental health had started to deteriorate significantly. He developed hallucinatory visions of glowing blue slugs that would crawl on and around him, and they showed up more frequently as time progressed and his condition worsened. He developed a nervous twitch, and ended up having recurring paranoid delusions and panic attacks. He distanced himself from Clément, because he didn't want him to see what was happening. It broke his heart to avoid his best friend, but he knew Clément had John now, and it was difficult to see them together.

After some time being cloistered away in his room, Clément visited and convinced Gideon to spend some time together again. They went for a walk and Clément caught him up on the things that were happening in his life. He told Gideon about running away to secretly 'marry' John, and Gideon was excited for him. Gideon expressed a concern that they were being followed, and Clément assured him that wasn't the case. They started to cross a bridge that led over a river, and he had a mental breakdown. Clément tried to calm him down, but Gideon mistook him for a dangerous follower and in his panic, pushed Clément off the bridge and into the water.

After realizing what he had done, he started looking for his friend in the river. He tried following the stream in hopes of seeing him washed up somewhere, but hours passed and to no avail. He collapsed and started to sob, not knowing that meanwhile Clément was being turned into an esk. He didn't return to Gideon, as he had forgotten who he was and what happened.

After some time had passed, Clément, who now called himself Kell, came across Gideon again by happenstance. He remembered and recognized him and was angry, and approached to haunt him. He found that Gideon was already haunted by his own mind, and must have spiraled after pushing Clément off the bridge. He was disheveled, dirty, and emaciated. His eyes were sunken and dark, and his cheeks were stained with tears as he had been arguing and screaming at himself alone by the river. It seemed like he had never returned home after what took place on the bridge. Clément was still resentful, but he couldn't walk away from what Gideon had become. He transformed him, but slinked away before Gideon could see who it was or what had happened.
