This RPF as hell… I am aware that Max Verstappen would probably not act like this in real life
In the past, Ivan is an American (New Yorker) Red Bull racer who was very happy-go-lucky and people joke about how he still believes in Santa. He does well with the second seat, except for the fact that he of course can’t keep up with Max and Red Bull essentially always forces him to be second to Max even when he is doing better than him
(Spoilered for discussion of a violent crash. It’s not that graphic I just don’t wanna surprise anyone randomly clicking through here. talks about car wreckage and amputation and burns)
Red Bull makes a really shitty management decision about the car which ends up causing a flaw in the engine. This is the Austin GP. Max, getting pissed off mid race, tries to run Ivan off the road on turn 13, making contact with his car. In an unfathomably unlucky sequence of events, Ivan’s engine explodes. This sends his and Max’s car flying into the barriers on opposite sides of the track.
Ivan’s car immediately bursts into flaming pieces, splitting in half right down the middle with Ivan still inside as any loose parts are now off the car and scorched. Basically what happens is the car has folded in on itself and has trapped Ivan’s right arm under a bunch of wreckage, and is slowly grilling the rest of him. Oscar is the one who pulls over and drags Ivan out of the car since he would’ve gotten even worse burns if he’d waited for the marshals.
This crash sends Ivan to the hospital, where his arm is immediately amputated from the upper arm down. Other than that he suffers the worst burns on his legs and several lacerations on his upper body, one damaging his vocal cords. There’s also probably some internal bleeding shit and bones that break and all that after the immediate event. Ivan luckily recovers quite well, left with a lot of scars and a very fancy prosthetic arm.
If you’re wondering what happened to Max, he was beat up in the crash, but got away with some sprains and a concussion. His car did flip upside down, though, and because of the rush to help Ivan, he was upside down and partially unconscious for like 7 minutes before they managed to flip his car back over.
When he comes back to F1 the next year, he’s racing for Haas since they were the only ones who would dare to accept and accommodate for one of the F1 amputees. Because I can, I write it so that Haas has undergone an amazing rehiring of their team, and now they’re actually quite decent.
Ivan is no longer happy-go-lucky after the crash, he’s quite irritable and scared to trust people. He knows realistically that this isn’t true, but he’s convinced that Max caused the crash on purpose, since Max had been very distant to him before the incident, and had never once really properly acknowledged how much Ivan loved him and gave up for him. The crash served as a breaking point for him.
His new racing engineer is a boy named Davis, who’s just as young as him (like 25) and has a strong personality for an engineer. Ivan purposely doesn’t get along with him at first, he just wants an excuse to get pissed off at people, but eventually Davis becomes someone that Ivan vents to a lot since Davis is a very good listener and thinks similarly to Ivan. They hang out a lot and Ivan thinks very fondly of him. They kiss eventually. Haas is probably the healthiest team on the track at this point.
