Astes is the captain of a trade ship. He grew up in a small fishing town and was mostly left to his own as his parents didn’t care much about his whereabouts and upbringing. His parents’ negligence taught him to be self-reliant and independent but also instilled deep fears of abandonment and loneliness in him.

He began working at the local docks at the young age and spent his free time fishing, swimming or jumping from cliffs with friends. Within years his family environment was becoming tense and suffocating: his temperamental and venturous father who spent earlier years of life roaming around the world was displeased with boring orderly family life and was constantly arguing and quarreling with Astes’s mother. Shortly after Astes' sister Lyra was born, his father disappeared without a word.

Astes adored and doted on his sister and helped his mother taking care of Lyra. He tried to protect her from the kind of childhood he had to experience, was always there to help her and showered her with affection, however without being overprotective.

He has a good-natured demeanor, he’s friendly and easy to talk to. Most often he seems to be in a buoyant and cheerful mood(or tries to keep up the appearance of being so), he dislikes conflicts and tries to steer clear from arguments and aggressive people.

Despite outward friendliness and sweet personality, Astes very reluctantly lets people get close to him and shares his real emotions and fears. Most of the time he prefers to keep up a happy appearance even when he doesn’t feel that way.

He cares about his close friends and people he considers family A LOT. For their sake he would sacrifice everything and suffer any hardships.

He tends to be impatient and sometimes can be rash in his decisions or do reckless things because of his craving for adventure.
