Mezmerane

Backstory
  There once was a man named Armerane. He had a rather successful job as a blacksmith, a loving wife, and a wonderful reputation. He wanted for little else except a world without suffering. The one thing he didn't have, that he so desperately wanted, was confidence. His confidence, and several other of his emotions, were stolen from him by a demon within a black mask. However, with the love and support of those around him, he learned to get by.

  That is, of course, until his brother in law, the one person who hated him, stepped in. As the leader of the town guard, his brother carefully managed his subordinates to ensure things were right as rain. But he clearly had it out for Armerane, and his sister, whom he considered a traitor to the family name. So, Armerane's brother in law hatched a plan to have them both punished for attempted tax evasion. He made sure to send his collectors out to Armerane's house while he was out getting materials for his smithing, and waited for his two men to come back with both of them in chains.

  They came back, by themselves, covered in blood. One was missing an eye. In a struggle that had broken out, Lunella was executed on the spot, and Armerane was left to burn to death on his kiln. The brother punished the two for their clumsiness, but was all the same relieved that they at least made sure both of their targets were dealt with.

  Armerane, though heavily wounded, survived in a physical sense. But wished he was dead. His wife was gone, and his reputationw as tarnished by his brother. He became a recluse.

  Days later, he was seen walking through town square in a black cloak. After his brother and a couple guards pulled him aside to question him, they found him wearing a mask. His brother recoiled in horror.

  It was the mask that Armerane had worn so long ago.

  And with a quick, almost imperceptible motion, Armerane began what had become known as the Olai Massacre. He slaughtered most of the town guard and anyone who stood against him before he and his brother ended up ending eachother. The event, at least, inspired a closer look into the subject of mental health, as people knew Armerane to be very different from the usual Kendan psychologically. But neither he or his brother truly died. And Armerane only became much. much. worse.

The demon that took his confidence enslaved his mind on an immense depth, effectively sealing Armerane within his own mind as his lost side took a life of its own, twisting Armerane's wishes for a world without suffering into an omnicidal endgame. Thus, replacing the first syllable of his name with that of the demon's, Mezmerane was created. A monster that heralds the end of reality with a gleeful smile and any number of empty promises to get people on his side.
