A former Team Rocket scientist, they decided to quit in order to become a Pokemon Trainer. Unfortunately they also decided to steal a bunch of (already stolen) Pokemon from Team Rocket to use as their party members, landing them in hot water with the organization they had already brazenly quit.

story
(The team that’s listed in the Team tab is based on the team of my current Pokemon Crystal playthrough)
Wren had always been extremely eccentric and interested in Pokemon. Although they wanted to learn everything about Pokemon, their main areas of interest were Pokemon evolution and Pokemon moves. Cursed with an unfortunately unsettling demeanor and an ambitious attitude where they’ll go any lengths to learn about Pokemon (no matter who it hurts), Wren was rejected from Prof. Oak’s lab. Because of this, they turned to Team Rocket and started working for them as a scientist instead.
Because Team Rocket stole a lot of rare Pokemon, Wren generally enjoyed their work, and their aptitude lead to them getting promoted to a Head Scientist. Most of their work involved figuring out how Pokemon evolution worked so that Team Rocket could sell both rare evolved Pokemon and “Early Evolution” services. Since the science of Pokemon evolution was one of Wren’s main areas of study, they were enthusiastic about the opportunity and provided great results. However, as the idea that Pokemon could be made to evolve early seemed to become less probable, Team Rocket eventually abandoned that plan and shifted focus. Seeing how successful Silph Co. was financially, all of the scientists of Team Rocket were instructed to switch primarily to the development of Pokemon technology instead of researching the Pokemon themselves. All of the Pokemon that were given to Wren and their team as research subjects were common, and only there to test the effects of potential Pokemon products. Wren slowly started to feel as though their research was stagnating, and wasn’t sure what to do about it...
Eventually, merely trying to undercut Silph Co.’s business wasn’t enough for Team Rocket, and wanting access to the company’s status and state of the art technology, Team Rocket launched a raid on Silph Co.’s main area of operations. Silph Co. was successfully under Team Rocket’s control for months, and during that time all Team Rocket scientists were mainly instructed to work alongside Silph Co.’s developers in order to accelerate the production of technology such as the Master Ball.
After seeing a single Pokemon trainer storm in and end Team Rocket’s raid all by themselves, Wren became deeply interested in the lifestyle of a trainer. Nobody to tell you what to do, the ability to go out and find all kinds of rare Pokemon to study, and access to a fantastic research and cataloging device known as the Pokedex! It was then that Wren knew exactly what they had to do. They stole themselves a team of incredibly rare and expensive Pokemon (including a Totodile, an Eevee, and multiple shinies) from Team Rocket and left in the middle of the night, only leaving a resignation letter behind.
Although they are now wanted by Team Rocket for their sudden betrayal of the organization, Wren couldn’t be happier as a trainer. They decided to change to a more sporty look and hairstyle to better match the typical trainer appearance, and are trying their best to live out the typical trainer lifestyle (Sometimes they kind of overdo it...).
