August isn't actually the real August. August Wolfgang died and a demon has been using his body ever since, but like a cool demon. And since demon language doesn't translate into any human language, and he does have to keep up the act that he is the real August, demon goes by August too. Makes sense. This is his third life. The first was as Bonnie Rosario, a 1930's speakeasy singer who started working for the mob after she was killed in a shootout and a demon took her body. Demon Bonnie was just one of a couple of demons who came to earth to take advantage of humans because Hell kind of sucks. Everything went to shit when they got involved with a fallen angel that killed most of Bonnie's friends. She killed the angel in the end, mostly because she didn't want to die herself. However, since it's illegal for demons to kill angels, she got on the divine's most wanted list. She tried to lay low for the rest of that life but got shot and killed after she got recognized by an old mob connection decades later. Robin Quill was killed in a car accident and was a notable couch surfur and punk rock groupie. It was a good life for someone hiding from the angel cops. Robin's life was way less notable than an angel killing mob member and she did her best to keep it that way. The next life was August's. Demon August intended for this one to be as notable as the last until demons started showing up in town and tried to fuck with him. Also he might have let it slip to his new best friend that he was a demon, so that's fun.
