Varin grew up poor, often stealing from folks around his small seaside town, the more one had, the more he'd take. Not out of greed, he never enjoyed it and most we're in similar situations as himself...It was necessity to survive.
He never dared to get too close to anyone or let anyone close to him in his younger years, not even his own family. He flew solo though he would attempt to help his siblings and mother if he had extra to spare, but he put himself first. Always.
In a reckless move, he took to stealing from ships that would dock in town. Money, food, whatever he could get. Though one such time he wasnt so lucky as to make it off with treasures and trinkets, stuck aboard as the ship sailed off and found out pretty quickly. He wasnt killed or treated poorly however, he was seen as part of the crew, taken under the captains wing. An almost father figure to him.
He learned everything he could from his crew, his captain. Learning from his old ways, he opened up a bit, shared more, became more selfless instead of selfish.
They docked at towns, traded goods, took shelter. One town was bountiful and beautiful. A wealthy class of creature, most snobby and unwilling to talk to anyone who wasnt in said class. Thats where he saw Opaline for the first time, nothing more than a passing glance, barely sparking anything. They however ran into each other a few times, figuratively and literally. That fated bump that had him falling head over heels.
