EARLY LIFE
Anthea Stathopoulos was born in *** on December 28th, 1914 to greek parents Agathe and Helladios, originally from Arcadia, in the region of Peloponnese. Fleeing Greece's terrible economic conditions, Anthea's parents and her two older brothers Bion and Iason migrated to **** in 1910, where the couple started working as manual laborers in a wheat farm. By the time Anthea was born, Helladios was working as the foreman's assistant and soon after, became the foreman himself.
Anthea grew up among crops, vegetables and all kinds of flowers and inherited her mom's love for gardening. Her mother always told her even if working in a farm was hard, it was never work if you enjoyed what you were doing. When she was 10 years old, Anthea started her own small, private plant collection and would often go off-road on her way back to school to go look for new, interesting plants to add to her garden.
FOUNDING THE PLANTAE KINGDOM NURSERY
During the Great Depression of the 1930s the farming industry was hit hard by the collapse of wheat prices. Life was hard and spirits were low, and that's when Anthea decided she wanted to open a community garden as a sort of morale-booster where people could relax and forget about their troubles for a couple of hours.
And so in 1939, at age 25, she opened the Plantae Kingdom plant nursery to the public, where she welcomed people from all ages and gave them gardening lessons and tips and shared her love for plants with everybody. The Great Depression ended soon after the opening of the nursery only to be followed by the second World War. Anthea decided that there was no better time for a morale-booster and kept the nursery open.
THE DISCOVERY OF PLOTTIES
One day during the year 1940, after closing the nursery for the day, while she was cleaning, she heard some rustling nearby and saw a group of tiny creatures among a pile of leaves she had raked the day before. That day, she discovered Plotties for the first time. She decided to keep the knowledge about these creatures to herself and secretly started taking care of them and studying them in an attempt to understand and build a connection with them.
In 1943, Anthea decided to expand her nursery and dedicate a large area of it to a Victory Garden. That same year, she joined the Farmerettes (an extension of the Women's Land Army) and helped the war effort with constant, large shipments of extra food for troops and allies overseas.
