Background
- born in Hawaii and lived with parents in Japan until they divorced at age 10-11
-Her mother resents her due to a hard first pregnancy - unhappy with her station in life and takes it out on Hazel
- Unbeknownst to her father, her mother would lock her in closets as punishment: which lead her to develop claustrophobia. When her father found out, he divorced her and won custody.
-Father moved her and Elise - younger sister by 18 months - to Everett, Washington where her father gets a job working as a connection between SpaceX and NASA
- Mother's side of family still treats Hazel and Elise + Dad as family
-She struggles with depression and ed's in middle school and high school, and while still suffering from them, she is slowly overcoming her struggles by the time the story starts.
