9 is the ninth test subject from the first iteration of the Stanmer Hill human tests.
they were always the odd one out.
always staying on the sidelines, watching.
once the massacre happened, he did not leave. He chose to stay. Apprenticing under Hill alongside Sawyer. After many years together, 9 and Sawyer split from Hill, going on to their own ventures.
9 decided to study, and for many many years they did. Sawyer staying by their side.
Eventually he made his own institute. Instead of using innocent children as subjects, he uses criminals.
the problem is the place is less of a testing facility and more of a torture palace.
once 9 had finished gathering everything, they invited 2, Dahlia, Night shade, and 8 to their lab.
This is when the survivors #1: realized 9 and 10 were alive, and #2: they were also absolutely insane.
After seeing the torture and the moral dilemma of who deserves to suffer that much and who doesn't, they left, not knowing how to proceed with this new knowledge.
After 9 got closer to Night shade he eventually snapped and killed Hill, soon regretting it due to his complicated feelings related to Hill.
