Profile

Name: Hoagie

Gender: Male

Species: Mustang/Irish Draft

Height: 15.3hh

History: Hoagies mother, Feather, was meant to be a broodmare in Ireland, but after discovering her tail defect was hereditary (bred once, a colt called Plumage), they decided to put her to work as a cart horse. She was a brilliant worker, without a single day lame and hugely valuable to her owners, who were quite poor at the time. She proved to be so good, that her owners were offered work in England by some wealthy people, who then, at the time of the American gold rush, decided to move to America, along with Feather and her owners.

Feather took it all in her stride, boarding the ship with no issue and settling in to her new home in the west.

One night, a painted Mustang stallion broke into the yard and covered Feather. She continued to work and earned the wealthy prospectors and her owners a huge sum of money and when the time came for her to give birth, they were able to retire her and let her be a mother.

On a warm and starry night, Hoagie was born! He had the same twisted tail as his mother and a gorgeous gold and white coat.

Hoagie was cheeky from day one. He gave his humans the runaround and never stayed still for too long, but loved to curl up like a dog to sleep. He had a relatively quiet upbringing, aside from his antics, which included jumping out of his pen, even though he never actually went anywhere.

His owner, who was the son of the owners of Feather, now a young man, was the one to break him. Although Hoagie took to his tack like an old pro, riding him was a different matter. His personality got the better of him and all he wanted to do was play! His owner eventually used this enthusiasm to his advantage and trained Hoagie to rope cattle, barrel race, jump, bend and weave and long distance riding.

In an unfortunate turn of events, Hoagie and his owner were ambushed by Native Americans one day on a long distance ride. It was a case of mistaken identity, as the family had always had a good relationship with the natives. Hoagie was spooked in the ambush and ran. The natives felt so awful for spooking his best horse, they gave him one of their own.

Hoagie ran for miles and miles, before coming to a halt in a canyon far from home. Lost, exhausted and alone in the winding passages, he wandered.

He finally found his way out, after following the scent of a mare, which had drifted down in to the valley.

After he found his way out, he spotted the mare in the distance. He was so desperate for company, that he cantered straight over to meet her. He did not expect her reaction! She glared at him, but he didn't take any notice, so she lunged, teeth bared! What a rude mare, he thought.

Hoagie finally got the drift and trotted away. Not to be dissuaded, he followed her at a safe distance for weeks on end, until she finally relented and allowed him to walk next to her.

Over the next year, they became an item and Belle fell pregnant. They had several foals over the course of their lives and their herd grew with other feral and wild horses joining along the way.

(story is a work in progress!)

Personality: He is a hardy dependable boy with a HUGE personality. he likes to play tricks and tug and pull on peoples clothes or snap at dogs as they go by. he is extremely strong and willful so stopping him when he sees something he wants can be difficult. but when put to work he is very loyal and a great boy who deserves extra pats.
