In this Nightmare of the Old City, Heron re-educates Susan's wayward brother Why as he'd intended-- instead of torturing him as he'd been ordered, Heron will not spill a drop of Why's blood. He'll terrorize him, yes, and deprive him of all comfort until he's to the brink of insanity, but he will never raise a finger against him. Little by little, he'll dole out small mercies, binding Why to his will. He'll rehabilitate him. Train him. One training montage later and Why is an immaculately loyal, emotionless husk of a man, just like Heron.
Much to Heron's bewilderment, Sue fucking hates Heron for turning her brother into this thing. and. elopes with ryn. Why brings them in himself, to be executed. heron kills his student--his proxy son--in a hysterical rage. tries to break sue outta jail but she refuses bc what he did to her brother was unforgivable. heron demands she kill him now then. she's like hey break ryn free first. So he does. then she's like. come here. nearly gives him a kiss but she's shot a bunch of times w guards' crossbows right at the critical moment. heron closes her hand around his sword and impales himself on it and they finally get 2 embrace as they die. ryn delivers some witty little closing speech about the nature of the heart before he's shot too oh what great shakespearean tragedy <3 the end
