Materially, Eial grew up never wanting for much. He recognized he was comfortable. But he wasn't ever really challenged. Except when his childhood friend decided she was going to bail -- Eial choked.

Like, sure, it sucked here, but wouldn't it suck more to just lose everything?

The reality of her having left sank in pretty soon, though, and Eial staggered out into the world too. Ascalon, he'd head that way and bolster his knowledge of metals with some engineering tricks, get himself established, figure his own shit out.

Even that plan changed, though. After getting waylaid and washing up at some small tavern outside the central human city, he met another engineer. Or like, the initial impression was more: weird, scrappy human, absolutely blitzed. Then he learned this guy was an engineer for the local carnival. Slash handyman. The two pretty much immediately hit it off and began to travel together doing odd jobs across central Tyria, until they took up work from some sky pirates out in Lion's Arch.

This is, you might guess, where things reached criticality for the pair. Scarlet, Aetherblades, the horrors they helped manufacture.

They were the heels here, and they had to turn. Fast.
